EMMANUEL PAPAS[1773-1821]
Leader of 1821 in Makedonia
He was born at 1773 in Dovista[today Em.Papa] of Serres.In very young age he was
Established in Serres,where he was succesfully occupied with the commerce Very
Soon he extended his activities in big cities of Central Europe.
He got married Afentra[Fedra]and he obtained eleven children.
Because of his financial level, he obtains big influence in Serres to Christians and Ottomans,too.He makes worthy his position in order to protect the enslaved Greek from Turkish high-handed acts.In one of his journey to Konstantinoupoli,wherehe had transported a part of his enterprising activities,he takes part in Filiki Eteria and at 1819 he was elected chief cashier.Filiki Eteria orders him to organize the revolution in East Makedonia,Chalkidiki.Mount Athos,Thessaloniki and he was called ‘Defender of Makedonia’In spring of 1821,he forms and equips army corps by his money, with young men from Serres and Dovista.As leader of his army corp,he goes to Mount Athos[Monastery of Esfigmenos]where the situation is favorable,At the monastery,he declairs the revolution and the revolutionists have many succecces in summer of 1821.In Serres,Turks imprison his wife and five of his children and confiscate his property.The news for the revolutionists are not pleasant.Turks are organized and having big reinforcements from Thessaloniki restrict the revolution in peninsulas of Chalkidiki.The monks capitulate and Em.Papas leaves Mount Athos,in order not to give himself to Turks.Reinforcements by South Greece do not arrive and in Novemberof 1821,Kassandra-which was the last stronghold of the revolutionists-was captured.Em.Papas leaves Chalkidiki by Hatzi-Visviki’s,who was from Hydra,sailboat,in order to continue the fights in South Greece.The hardships and the grief because of the failureof revolution bended Em.Papas’health and he died in 5-12-1821 by his heart.He buried in Hydra with honors as a COMMENDER IN CHIEF Em.Pappas sacrificed everythingfor the revolution:money,family,5 of 8 sons,who died in wars,and finally his life.He was pure and disinterested fighter.Although he was rich,he did not hesitate to abandon his riches and his comforts in order to correspond in the calligof the nation,paying very big price for him and his family.This is the singularity and the graduer of Em.Pappas’sacrifice,because he knew from the beginning that his participation in this revolution would meanmisfoortunes and tragedys in his family.In 1865 he awarded by the honor of COLONEL.Today,his bust decorates the Field of Mars between the figures of the other heros of 1821.Em.Papas’statues are also in his mother country,in Serres,in Thessaloniki,in Kassandra and in Dafni.His mother country,Dovista,changed its name as Em.Papas at 1931 upon his honor.The new municipality,where his mother country belongs after Kapodistrias’program since 1997,is called EM.PAPAS too.
