Has anybody heard the story of the Black african families who live around Ulcinj, they date back from Roman times, when they were brought over as slaves, they have stayed in that area ever since keeping themselves to themselves. I heard there are only 6 families left, but they all speak Serbo Croat.
A friend of My father Mr Cuddon, who was also my english teacher at school [an expert of Yugoslavia too], wrote a travellers guide to Yugoslavia and went in search of these people, he searched high and low, but could not find them, until one day he was in a remote part of Montenegro near Ulcinj standing under shelter because it was pouring with rain and a deep voice asked him what the time was in perfect Serbo-Croation, he turned around and to his amazement he saw a black man, who was one of these African Montenegrins, unfortunately the black man had no info on his ancestors and had a lack of education because of no schooling, so it was hard to get any info off him.
Does anybody know anymore info on these people?

They don't descend from slaves of the Roman age. Their ancestors were taken captive by pirates of Ulqin who were renown sailors. They were originally from Northern Africa and were probably brought in during te Ottoman period. I am not certain, but I believe they were known as 'Harap' (from Arab, also synonymous to 'swarthy' or 'black').

One of the last names of these "black" families are "Surla", they originate from Ulcinj, but they have since then mixed throughout Montenegro....

This is a documentary from National Geographic Channel about Blood Feuds and the Kanun in Albania

I notice that many Montenegrins have unusually curly/nappy hair, more so than others in the balkans especially. Perhaps the cause? Cetinje, 1915 I believe

Curly hair is quite common among Albanians, this doesn't mean that they have African ancestry. Also I doubt there were that many of them that they would have had any large impact on the Balkans. I think that it's just that the black huy is huge. Btw, looking at his pants is he wearing an albanian costume?

Nah, those people are short. You can tell by their physical properties. I would say that they are in the mid 5 foot range.
And both Albanians and Serbo-Monteys used those types of pants. The white qelesh is a sign of Albanianness.

Hmm, I agree now that I looked more at it. They're pretty short. Although I think that the black man would be considered tall even if he were to live now. They look pretty weak too.

Wow, they rly do look small compared to the black guy ,,
And the tirqe worn by the black man, a typical Albanian costume, were also worn by some Montenegrin clans, particularly those of Brda that must've been influcned by the Malsors, but not so much the black mountaineers of Cetinje and vicinity. This is what Reginald Wyon, an English traveller who visited these lands in the begining of the 20th century, had to say;
"In the mountain districts and borderlands of the Brda the Albanian costume of tight-fitting white serge trousers, bordered with black braid, is largely worn ... "

Well, I dont think they were particularly numerous to begin with. I have also been to Ulqin a couple of times, perhaps five times, and at two of those times I stayed maybe two weeks each, and despite this I never saw any black Ulqinak.

I never heard of Ulqin or Ulqinak, where in the hell is Ulqin anyway?? However i did hear about a place called Ulcinj but not Ulqin.
