Bulgarians partially Hellenes.

A Bulgarian from Chepelare. An excellent example of the Pontic Mediterranean type, except for an unusually small cranial vault. In Bulgaria this Mediterranean type seems actually in the majority.

A pure southern Pontic Mediterranean. 100% Thracian and identical to the southeastern Mediterranean Aegean Hellenes.
According to Dr. Beth Cohen, Thracians had "the same dark hair and the same facial features as the Ancient Greeks."
Beth Cohen (ed.) Not the Classical Ideal: Athens and the Construction of the Other in Greek Art. Leiden, 2000.
Dr. Aris N. Poulianos states that Thracians like modern Bulgarians belong mainly to the Aegean athropological type.[47]

2. The varieties that make up the anthropological type of Crete stand out, with great enough accuracy, from the anthropological types of northern Africa and, secondly, the types of the Middle East. They are closer to the type of the Aegean basin, generally, which extends to Thrace and Southern Bulgaria, in western Asia Minor and parts of the Black Sea.
"The descend of Cretans", page 127, year 1971.
Apart from Thrace, the Thracian variety lies in eastern Macedonia(Greek), Eastern Thrace, in western Asia Minor, partly on the islands of the Aegean and apparently to the north, the southern and eastern provinces of Bulgaria. It can be even considered that is the southeastern variety of "Pontic" type described by Bunak V.V. 1946.
"The origin of the Greeks", pages 120-131, year 2001.
The influence of the Thracian variety on the population of Asia Minor is much greater than the influence from western Asia Minor to Thrace.

What is Pontic:
PONTIC. A variety of Mediterranean or Atlanto-Mediterranean, so named by Bunak.
www.theapricity.com/snpa/troe-appendixII.htm
Greek Mediterraneans according to Bunak V.V. are Pontics.
In studying the racial composition of southern Russia, there was evidence of a moderately tall, long-headed, brunet Mediterranean form, which is concentrated along the northern shore of the Black Sea, but which also appears sporadically in the entire Russian population. To western Europeans and Americans, it is better known than its frequency would warrant, for it is exemplified by several world famous ballerinas and opera singers. This is the Mediterranean racial division which the Russian anthropologists call Pontic 139 and which the Poles recognize as a very minor element in their own population. It is with little doubt of Neolithic date in southern Russia, Rumania, Bulgaria, and the Hellespont region, and probably in Greece and the Aegean. In most of Thrace it seems more basic than the Danubian, or at least more common. What its relationship may be to the introduction of the Neolithic economy into Europe by land or by sea, cannot be determined without more data.

The Pontic Mediterraneans
Along the northern and western shores of the Black Sea are found, among other populations, brunet Mediterraneans of*generalized type, called Pontic by the Russian anthropologists, who are usually of medium to tall stature and who seem related on the one hand to the Atlanto-Mediterraneans and on the other to the long-faced Mediterranean prototype of Asia Minor and the Caucasus. Inland from the Black Sea shores they are found sporadically in Russia, Poland, and the countries along the upper course of the Danube. They also seem to form an early population level in Serbia and Albania. Their precise archaeological history has not yet been traced, and their relationship to the Danubian invaders of central Europe at the beginning of the local Neolithic is unknown. They do not, however, conform closely to the physical type of the early Danubians as known to us by a small series of skeletal remains. Much more work needs to be done in southeastern Europe before their historical position and relationships can be established.

PONTIC GREEKS.
Bulgarians similar to Greek Cretans:
The important discovery about Crete, however, is the fact that its population is mostly Atlanto-Mediterranean; this race seems to be almost equally important in most of Greece. It has also appeared in the Dinaric area, and in Serbia; we shall see more of it in the eastern Balkans.
www.theapricity.com/snpa/chapter-XII14.htm
The Bulgarians are a composite people, with the following racial elements easily discernible: (a) a medium to tall-statured Atlanto-Mediterranean; (b) a partially blond Neo-Danubian, of typical snub-nosed form;
Of these varied elements, the first two are the most important, and the first more than the second. The presence of a strongly entrenched Atlanto-Mediterranean population of Neolithic date in all of the lowland Balkans south and east of the Iron Gate is becoming increasingly evident. In Bulgaria it is geographically most concentrated along the southern ethnic periphery, and among Bulgarian colonies abroad, as in the Crimea.
www.theapricity.com/snpa/chapter-XII15.htm
(3) A tall, dolichocephalic or mesocephalic type with dark hair and dark brown eyes, a straight nasal profile, and a tendency toward a lesser leptorrhiny than the total group. This is an Atlanto-Mediterranean racial type which is also prevalent in other Balkan countries. It may also be sorted out of available statistical series of Greeks, while it is common in Bulgaria and easily distinguishable among Serbs. It, or a similar type, also occurs with Dinarics in northern Italy and the Tyrol. In northern Albania it is commonest in Malsia Jakovës and Dukagin.

In Prosoasiatic type included the Greeks of Trapezounta and Erzerum, Georgians and to a small degree the Greeks of Marioupolis and of western Asia Minor.
In this variety the Turkophones Greeks of Erzurum belong and obviously in a small percentage the southern and the western groups of Asia Minor.

"Eastern"-Mediterranean(Bertil J. Lundman):
Was modeled off of this Macedonian Greek plate:
The Pontic type of the Indo-Mediterranean race, or Pontic race, Black Sea or Eastern Mediterranean type - is extended among the peoples of the coast of the Black sea, for example, of Adygei and South Russians. Somewhat in terms of larger sizes, and also in terms of increased percentage of the omitted (?) tip of the nose and light eyes it is different from the more southern Caspian type.
The Northern Pontic type of the Europeoid race - according to Bunak, the northern variety of the Pontic type, differing from the southern one by lighter pigmentation.
The Northern Pontic Race
Three major types, the central Great Russian, the Polesian, and the Ryazan are considered by V. V. Bunak to be derived from a pigmented "Northern Pontic race," which he considers to be the northeastern branch of the Mediterranean race (cf. R. Biasutti, Le raze ei popoli della terra, UTET, Turin : vol. 2, p. 207):
The Pontid subrace of the East-Mediterranean race. This subrace is found in certain regions west and north of the Black Sea.
Bulgaria and southeastern Macedonia appear to be predominantly East-Mediterranean in race.
Pondid=south-eastern Europoid Mediterranean.
North Pondid=A lighter version of Pondid, depigmented or mixed with northern elements.
PONTIC. A variety of Mediterranean or Atlanto-Mediterranean, so named by Bunak. It is concentrated in Bulgaria and in the Rumanian lowlands: it also is found in the Caucasus and Ukraine and westward sporadically as far as Germany, Poland, and Lithuania.

PONTID (Cherkess type)
Mediterranid subtype. Pontids are found in greatest concentration in southeastern Europe (the Balkans, southern Romania, the Ukraine), and predominate in regions immediately adjacent to the Black Sea (including parts of the Caucasus), after which Bunak named the type (Pontic; to the ancient Greeks, the Black or Euxine Sea was known as Pontos, "the Sea"). The type is tall (yet not as tall as the Atlanto-Mediterranid type) and quite gracile, with smooth facial features, and is characterized by a high skull, a narrow forehead, somewhat narrow apertures of the eyes, and a lighter pigmentation compared to the Mediterranid mean. Cf. North-Pontid.
NORTH-PONTID
Sometimes used of Nordid/Corded-Pontid intermediates, typical of e.g. the Ukrainian population.
