Only North Italy looks like a European country. The South Italy is the same as Greece. In North Italy the economic situation is better than in South but I haven't heard Sicilians asking for autonomy... Just because you haven't seen something it doesn't mean that it doesn't exist.

The BBC is a discredited agency that expresses the interests of the Foreign Office. If you want some normal news in England better read The Guardian or the Telegraph.
Some big landowners, like the guy who speaks in the article, want autonomy for their interests and everything is right about negation. The island doesn't have a proper hospital and they have to travel to Gianina if they have a serious problem and many people die due to this. Corfu doesn't produce 20% of the GDP, this is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard. They don't even produce 5%.
Quite frankly I don't give a crap if they go away. Good riddance. As far as I know everyone is a burden to Athens. Especially northern Greece.

AHAHAHAAHAHA thats the joke of the year....without northern Greece you would be starving and die of thirst...just because everything produced goes to Athens you think your are the kings...and electricity comes from the socket, doesnt it? Giftoi Athinaioi..

Now that is the joke of the year. Northern Greece and especially Western Macedonia (where Kastoria lies) is one of the poorest parts of Greece. The GDP per capita is lower than as of 2004 was 11.248,00€. Attica's GDP per capita as of 2004 was 20.215,70 €. observatory.egnatia.gr/02_indicators/02_ko-b04.htmobservatory.egnatia.gr/[/url]2X richer. It has nothing to do with state negation. The state is not obliged to give you anything and you don't have anything to give economically speaking. Either you work and compete or you get poor. This is how Capitalism works. Your main source of income is selling fur and then you are wondering why your economy is in such shape. Everything produced is not coming to Athens for free, people are buying them and you are being paid for your services. And we are paying more money than we should because of the tarifs. Soon EU is going to lift the barriers and we will have real free trade. Which means we will import cheaper goods from outside and that pretty much signals your end. Now I am not saying that this is entirely your fault. The state should have done something in order to educate these people and make them more competitive and to invest in skills and knowledge, since you are still too expensive to compete the rest of the Balkan workers (that's why they are taking the companies). And I support giving you help and assistance since I am a good person , but to moan that we are the cause of your condition pai polu. If you are going to reply either bring statistics and facts to prove your thesis or don't bust my balls. I have more important things to do than teaching economics for free. Gotta love Capitalism.

Athens as the capital of Greece has been fed now for centuries by the other Greek regions. Atticas prosperity has been built up artificially, tell me how Athens became what it is today? When Greece gained independence it was even not worth becoming the capital, it was a village, at this time even Kastorias GDP was a multiple of that of Athens I bet.
There is no need to be that arrogant, since Athens present situation is the result of long lasting feedings coming especially from Macedonia and also Kastoria, when we had much better times when the fur trade was still intact.
Now where all industry has been centralized in Athens, at the expense of all other Greek regions, especially the Macedonian ones, you are chirping like a bird from safe height. Internally Athens would have never accomplished what it is today and I expect from you more respect and gratefulness, instead we get to hear an unbearably arrogant person, that thinks he is the best , calling Northern Greece "a burden" to Athens. Kata t'alla omos eimaste Kommounistes.

"We don't want independence," Mr Tsoukalas says. "We still want to be part of Greece. But what we want is control over our finances, so that the money we raise on the island stays on the island." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Its all about that. I hate Athens too. I live in Athens ... and I hate it. As a Macedonian I know how paracite Athens is for the rest of Northern Greece (Includining the poor Ionians too). They live from our money. I was forced to move in Athens as ... an ecomic immigrant too! I would love an economic indepence too for Macedonia. I would love to be like a city-state or a region-state inside Greece. I know that if Thessaloniki was economically indepedent... it would be 10 times more rich than Athens. If Fyrom was not part of the joke... I would be the first who would love to see an Hellenic Republic Of Macedonia. Those jokes the Fyromians rouin my dream. Since they exist.. my dream goes back. But guys... dont mix up things. Thats a tottal different thing with the idepedence you wish for . Relax your dreams...

No unified we are stronger. Our great grandfathers didnt die for our country in order to see their troubles destroyed 100 years later. We are Greeks after all, one and the same.
What Basil is saying...is the product of frustration...and he is right on that. Athens is getting too much...they should be thankful instead of arrogant. Im sure the intelligent and reasonable ones are appreciating that whole Greece is working for their city.

This is a typical Cosmopolitan-Provincial struggle. The cosmopolitan Athenians see everyone else outside the city limits as a drag and the provincials see the Athenians as lazy city-dwellers who suck the blood of the rest of the country. It's a dynamic that exists in various degrees in almost any country with a huge cosmopolitan center.
Oh and the topic doesn't really belong here.

My brother had some north Italian friends when studying in London. He told me northern Italians did not like the southern ones. They did not even talk to them, saying they had stupid peasant mentality, lazy and too diffrent from them ppl.
