Hi all!
I need help about your onomastics and toponomastics. I have many questions for you. I start from the names Lucë-Luka and all around it.
Is Lucë (or Luçë) a male name? I found it used in the past. What does it mean? Lucië (or Luçie) is the female version?
Are Luc, Luka, LLuka, LLuca, LLukan regular albanian male names? Are these names of latin or greek origin? I guess, that Latin should come from Luca or Lucius, greek from the ancient Loukias, also Lucias (proto-indo-european word "Leu-k" "Lu-k" that means "bright").
Of course, the surnames Lluca, Luca, Lluka, Llukan come from Lluka. Right? Or are they related to a place called Luka or something like that?
I know that Mal Luçë is the name of a mount in the south Albania. I know that Lucë (Llucë) could come from latin word "lutum", and means "mud, mire, sludge" (proto-indo-european word Leuh-). According to you is it right? What does Mount "Lucë" mean in albanian?
Could you help me? Thanks!

Luka is a great name though. Luka Toni for example, is a great player because of his first name. But welcome to the forums Lucas. Nice to have an Italian around.

I think that albanian name Lukan is name that derivated and comes from animal UK (Ujk) which means Wolf. We have many people in albania that have name Luka for male and Luke or Lukie for females. Also there in Albania many people names and surnames are UKA or UJKAJ. (Wolf Lupo-Lupa) To proofed to you we Albanians saying for fan Uku ne Mal Zuku ne Kanal. Sincerely. Or look at baby names. babynamesworld.parentsconnect.com/meaning_of_Lucas.htmlIt's a Latin form of Loukas "see LUKE". LUKE Gender: Masculine Usage: English, Biblical Pronounced: LOOK (English) [key] English form of the Greek name Λουκας (Loukas) which meant "from Lucania", Lucania being a region in Italy. Saint Luke, the author of the third Gospel and Acts in the New Testament, was a doctor who travelled in the company of Saint Paul. Due to his renown, the name became common in the Christian world (in various spellings). As an English name, Luke has been in use since the 12th century. A famous fictional bearer was the hero Luke Skywalker from the 'Star Wars' movies. www.behindthename.com/name/luke

Clearly, Albanians adopted the name "Luka" from the Vlachs. Both north-danube and south-danube romance speaking populations use this name and it's a very common family name.

^^ Yea
Luka is an atypical Albanian name outside of the Malsia Catholic region, I have heard a few Lucaj last names, but, again, they are from the Catholic north.

The origin of the name Lucas is Greek...See George Lucas, the filmmaker etc. The greek name Loukas/Λουκᾶς (connected to greek word Leukos "white, light") comes from the proto-indo-european *Leuk (sanskrit "rocate" that meant "shines"). PIE *Leuk is probably a common matrix for many languages. In latin there are many related words: the personal name Lucius, the verb "lucere" ("shine), the word " lux, lucis" (means "light") and lucidus that means "clear". In the hittite language "lukezi" means "bright". In old slavic the word "luci" meant "light". In the Old English there is the noun "lēoht", and celtic people have a god called Lug (or Lugh), that was considered the God of Light, and was often associated with the sun and summer. Even in etruscan and oscan languages there are similar words (Lúvkis in oscan). Often, the meaning of Lucas is said to be "a person from Lucania", I think because one of the possible explantions of the word "Lucania" is "land of light". Anyway, Lucas isn't only related to word "light", but to word "wolf" too. :-)
