www.russiatoday.ru/news/news/28640Georgian forces have launched a massive military offensive to take control of its breakaway republic of South Ossetia. Fighter planes and heavy artillery are bombarding the capital Tskhinvali and fighting is raging in the outskirts. Meanwhile, the UN Security Council has begun an emergency debate on the situation after a request from Russia. Look at what we have here, The Georgian army, dressed in US uniforms, driving in US Duce 1/2 military trucks and equipped with US M4 assault rifles have commenced a full scale war to retake a break away province which is recognized by international law to be Georgian. Now we hear that Georgian artillery is shelling the city center and markets in the South Ossetian capital, and that a number of civilians have been killed. On top of all this, just hours ago Georgia declared a ceasefire, only to launch a sneak attack Pretty damn ironic, that the US is a staunch supporter of Georgian sovereignty, considering what happened in 1999.

www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/aug/08/georgia.russia1The announcement came as Russian prime minister Vladimir Putin, who is in China to attend the opening of the Olympic games, said that "aggressive" action by Georgia would incur a "response" from Russia.Georgian forces appear to have the upper hand and the element of surprise at the moment but they could soon find themselves fighting on two fronts, as another separatist region, the Black Sea enclave of Abkhazia, announced its troops were moving towards the Georgian border. Cossaks from Russia said they were also ready to go to the aid of the South Ossetians, many of whom have Russian citizenship.

www.hurriyet.com.tr/english/world/9611066.asp?gid=244&sz=46069UN DIVIDED At an emergency session of the U.N. Security Council failed on Friday to reach an agreement on a Russian-drafted statement that would have called on Georgia and separatists in its South Ossetia region to immediately halt all bloodshed.
The 15 Security Council members began meeting late on Thursday and remained behind closed doors for two hours until early Friday morning to discuss the three-sentence statement.
But council diplomats said one phrase in it was unacceptable to the Georgians, backed by the United States and Europeans. That wording called on all sides in the conflict "to renounce the use of force," according to a draft of the text.
After failing to agree, the council decided not to take any action on the issue, the diplomats said.
Russian Ambassador Vitaly Churkin, who had asked for the 11 p.m. EDT (0300 GMT) meeting to be held, did not hide his disappointment at the council's inability to agree.
He said it "unfortunately represents the absence of any political will amongst the members of the Security Council."UN once again proves what a bunch of spineless whimps they are, in their inability make any decisions.

This smells of Washington.................. The dilema for Russia now is do they invade as it does seem Georgia is in control of most of the territory.
If Russia does not act it will be an embarrasment for Putin.

Its been all quiet in mainstream media about all of this.....to the west kosovo is still a unique situation How about if we perceive Georgia as Kosovo and S. Osetia as Northern Kosovo? That would put us in complete parallel with the Russians, and not in the contradictory state that Russia is today: support for Osetia, Abkhazia independence NOT support for Kosovo independence
