In a couple of days time (10 September, Paris time)
Serbia won its opening game against Faroe Islands 2-0 (another lackluster performance by reports though)
France, surprisingly, lost 3-1 to Austria which will put them on edge. Second biggest threat Romania lost to Lithuania 3-0
With any luck the Orlovi might be able to hold off France to a draw (like we did against Portugal and Spain in previous recent qualifiers both home and away)

The performance was lackluster, but the Faroes were playing defense the whole time.
Romania and France losing so convincingly is really good for us. We don't have to beat them to advance now. But we must take all of our games against Austria, Lithuania and Faroe Islands (that is our only chance).

Its either a good thing or Austria and Lithuania can beat us aswell lol lol exactly, had a brain explosion over it this morning. France and Romania dropping points = good thing but... Lithuania and Austria beating top ranked opponents = well...not a good sign for us. I can already see this group having a lot more upsets. Euro group was also like that with Armenia beating Poland, drawing with Portugal etc....oh and borat beating Serbia etc

I don't think Lithuania and Austria are that good. Romania was injured and missing some of its key player. France is getting old, they have been on the decline for a while now. I don't think they won a game in the Euros. This just means they will come out hungry against us on Wednesday. I expect a loss, I can only dream we get a tie in Paris. Winning against Lithuania and Austria in October is CRUCIAL!!!

Altering other's people sayings and presenting the result as "Quote" should be forbidden and a good reason for permanent ban off these forums.

I'm not the biggest fan of Antic being the coach. He's done nothing for too long & he didn't want the job in the past. In any case, all the best to the team.

WCQ Preview: France - Serbia What: World Cup 2010 Qualification Group 7, Matchday 2 When: Wednesday 10th September, 2100 CET Where: Stade de France, Paris
Les Bleus Go Into Meltdown
The notorious volatile French crowd will have been whipped into a frenzy over the events that have unfolded over the last week. Not only have fans of les Bleus had to endure a turgid opening to their World Cup 2010 campaign, losing 3-1 away to Austria, but they found themselves to be picking daggers from their backs, lodged by those supposed to have their interests at heart.
Revelations that the FFF elected to keep Raymond Domenech only because of political reasons will not have gone down well with the French faithful. The news that fans were denied one of their heroes (Didier Deschamps or Laurent Blanc, who were both part of the World Cup winning squad) leading their country because of the sheer nepotism of the FFF will have gone down like a lead balloon in the streets of France.
Never shy to make their feelings known, the French crowd will, no doubt, be baying for blood at the Stade de France. This is hardly an atmosphere that France’s confidence sapped players will wish to play in.
Saturday evening was a disaster for les Bleus. It was clear from the early moments of the match that it was not to be their evening. Philippe Mexès, who had an evening to forget, scored an own goal early on before an Austrian defender nearly did likewise but saw a ball ricochet off his knee onto the crossbar and then to safety. It was to be one of those nights.
France were not just starved of luck. Les Bleus were horribly feeble defensively, with neither Mexès nor Gallas impressive at all in the centre of the rearguard, while the attack lacked zest and strength against an organised Austrian side that simply packed its defence and waited for opportunities on the counter-attack or, more notably, from set-plays.
Since Scotland defeated France at Hampden nearly two years ago, middleweight sides have all caused les Bleus problems by defending in a stubborn manner and merely biding their time yet Domenech has proved totally unable to do anything about it.
Serbia will, no doubt, take a similar approach.
Defensive Strength Key
Serbia’s feeble weekend performance against the Faroe Islands has been almost completely forgotten about as the spectre of France’s loss against Austria has loomed large over Group 7.
Newly appointed head coach, Radomir Antić, can at least argue his side got the job done. An own goal after half an hour and a goal from giant forward Nikola Zigic in stoppage time hardly built the most convincing of victories, especially as the Serbians were woefully inept between times. But the job was done.
It will be an entirely different affair for Serbia on Wednesday evening as they are likely to have to withstand a barrage of pressure from les Bleus. A backs-to-the-wall performance is certainly expected but, as Austria displayed, France are vulnerable if the defence is well organised and chances are taken.
With the likes of Nemanja Vidić, Ivica Dragutinović, Mladen Krstajić, all of whom boast great experience at both club and international level, to be called upon for the rearguard, Antić will have no problems with the strength of his defence.
A youthful midfield will be lead by 29 year-old Inter Milan star Dejan Stanković, who boasts the greatest number of caps (73) and goals (13) in the squad. Saša Ilić is the only other player in the centre of the park to boast a real international pedigree, although Genoa’s Boško Janković, who was a surprising omission from Saturday's squad, is certainly very close to reaching such a status.
Zigic will be a main focus for the Serbian side again. Standing at over 2 meters tall, the Valencia striker poses a unique threat to the French defence. Unable to cope with the far more modestly sized Austrians, if the delivery to the giant Zigic is correct, Serbia could really cause the home defence severe consternation.
TEAM NEWS
France
Confidence shaken, Raymond Domenech’s tactics have been at the centre of press speculation since the Vienna Calamity. Some journalists suggest he should change, others urge him to stick by his strongest eleven. Certainly, the squad that faced Austria looked, on paper, to be France’s strongest starting eleven. The likelihood is that any alterations would not aid the problems that France suffer from. A real target man is needed in attack, someone les Bleus can hit the ball long and direct to, while the defence needs greater strength in the air. None of the options open to Domenech would really provide these qualities.
Predicted line-up: Mandanda, Sagna, Evra, Gallas, Mèxes, Toulalan, L. Diarra, Nasri, Govou, Henry, Benzema
Serbia
Serbia will pick a physically strong squad in order to bully France at set plays. This should certainly not be a problem for Radomir Antić, who will deploy Zigic as his main striker in a defensively-minded formation. Antić only has one additional injury concern from Saturday’s match; Nantes’ Stefan Babović will be left frustrated on the sidelines after picking up a knock that will rule him out.
Predicted line-up: Disljenković; Rukavina, Dragutinović, Vidić, Obradović; Stanković, Ilić, Janković, Milijaš, Krasić; Zigić
PLAYERS TO WATCH
France
France played a simply horrible opening game against Austria. All aspects of their game need to be tightened up but, if they are going to win then they must start to score goals. The one player that has enjoyed recent international success is not Thierry Henry or Karim Benzema but Sidney Govou. If the winger can add to the three goals he has collected in the last two international fixtures, he will at least give les Bleus a chance.
Serbia
Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidić will be key at both ends of the field for Serbia. Rated as one of the best centre-backs in Europe, Vidić will be the man charged with keeping Karim Benzema and Thierry Henry quiet while he should pose a significant threat in the French box from set-plays.
PREDICTION
After an insipid performance at the weekend and all the off-field grumblings of the last few hours, it is hard to see France picking themselves up to beat a very able Serbian side. Serbia will likely go to the Stade de France with the aim of picking up a point and they have all the tools to do so. Goodbye Raymond?
France 1-1 Serbia
