Reconstruction of the minaret at the Mosque of Ferhat-Pasha Sokoloviæ in the northern Bosnian city of Banja Luka will begin in the following few days. The Ferhadija Mosque was destroyed by the genocidal Serbian aggressor May 7 1993,during the Serbian aggression against Bosnia.
Mufti of Banja Luka Edhem Camdzic stated that reconstruction of the mosque is the best message of hope, peace and tolerance.
So far, out of 16 destroyed mosques in the Banja Luka area, nine have been fully reconstructed.
Ferhat-Pasha Mosque (Bosnian: Ferhat-Pašina Džamija) or more widely known as Ferhadija Mosque was a central building of the city of Banja Luka and one of the most successful achievements of the Islamic architecture of the 16th century Bosnia.
The mosque was built in 1579 in a classical Ottoman style by an unknown architect apprentice of Mimar Sinan. It was commissioned by the Bosnian Sanjak-Beg Ferhat-Pasha Sokoloviæ. The Ferhadija mosque complex also included three small adjacent mausoleums carrying tombs of Ferhat-Pasha Sokoloviæ, his granddaughter Safi-Kaduna and his ensign, a central fountain called Shaderwan, Stone and wrought iron fence with the small fountain on the corner, and an old graveyard in the back.
A later addition to the complex was a near-by clock tower Sahat-Kula. Built in a modest scale as it was common for structures of this type in Bosnia the mosque was 18 meters (59 ft) in width and 14 meters (46 ft) in length while the main dome was 18 meters (59 ft) high. The minaret was 43 m (141 ft) high.
Ferhadija was listed as a cultural heritage of Bosnia in 1950 and was subsequently protected by UNESCO until its destruction by the genocidal Serbian fascist aggressor in 1993. The site and the remains of the mosque today are listed as a Bosnian national monument.

Kommandant Marko Amicus Posts: 361 (7/12/05 11:10 am) Mosque and Church, my [...] experience -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The other day I went to the nearby city of Bijeljina in the Pravoslavni Republik of Srpska in Bosna to go to a monastery.
I was walking with 3 cousins, my uncle, and my aunt, and we decided to first walk around and take pictures by some spomeniks in Bijeljna not to far from the monastery I was about to go to.
Then I had the most disgusting experience in my life...imagine wanting to cry while your gut is being wrentched, but your eyes are being ripped out.
This is what happened, this was that experience:
Throughout Bijeljina a large voice can be heard via a huge speaker. The voice said:
"Allah humwaaaaaaaahhhhh i jaaaaaahhhhh....huhuhuhujaaaaaaaaaaaaaa....Allah mi la humwaaaaaaahh....ge de niamwaaaaaahhhhhhh"
It was a Muslim "calling" or something coming from a nearby Mosque.
I will be honest with you all...when I heard that Muslim preachers voice from the Mosue echo through the city of Bijeljina I felt like I was being watched, like someone was about to stab me...i literally couldnt move.
I will never forget thatmoment that experience...every Serb on the streets of Bijeljina was quiet, pretended to ignore it but they listened as the eerie calling echoed around Bijeljina...it was extremely rogue....disgust swept Bijeljina but everyone was quiet.
The Muslims in Bijeljina are outright assholes because Bijeljina is majority Orthodox Serb by far. My uncle told me before the Mosque would make a calling quietly.
now they blast it on huge speakers the size of church bells and blast it so all serbs can hear it...
BUT DO YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY I WAS DISGUSTED...75 METERS FROM THE MOSQUE WAS THE MONASTERY I WAS GOING TO.
thats what disgusted me, i had such a huge sadness sweep me...it was very painful.
I went to the monastery grounds by now [the Muslim calling still echoing throughout Bijeljina]...THERE I WILL NEVER FORGET IT. ALL THE PRIESTS WALKED AROUND AND PEOPLE...HEADS DOWN,SOME HEADS STRAIGHT....WALKED, ACTED AS IF THEY WERE BUSY AND TRIED TO IGNORE IT. THAT PAINFUL MUSLIM CALLING WAS WRENCHING ALL OF THEIR SOULS.
I look straight and see an icon of Jesus...and I hear the Muslim calling.
It was the darkest day darkest moments in my life...filled with disgust, sadness, bitterness.
I attribute this day to the Mosque built in Bijeljina near the center...
I wish I could erase such horrible memory...I truly never despised Muslims more then after that day.

I think you have lost it, are you writing a fiction book about Bosnia and you made this story up? It really kinda sucks and isn't very moving or impactful. My moment of shock in BiH was seeing the RS police officer walking over the graves at the memorial in Potcari and realizing he coud have been involved in putting those people there and now he is gaurding the memorial? Seeing the Serbian patch on his uniform and just the feeling of the place and talking to survivors, it was really hard to take.

Not really, hollering from a mosque sends shivers down the spine of most Europeans. Having an Illyria folder on your computer, with posts people made years ago and pictures they posted that are just as old (all the while hiding your identity in every possible way) is the most disturbing thing on these forums.

Am I one of the few who actually enjoys and appreciates the church bells + Muslim prayers in the same city? I'm not even a believer per se, but I don't see anything wrong with either one of them.

I actulay dont mind the sound of churchbells they are in tune and its a pleasant sound, and the church bells are toned to not cause unesessary noise pollution.

I appreciate that on a audiophile account, but I disagree. Ezan for example goes great with certain beats, as so do church bells with some as well. In my mind, they both fit and have their own place.

Ringing bells are not the same thing as hearing Allahu Akber repeatedly and other Arabic chants... you are not disturbed by it because you are Muslim, for everyone else it is 'weird' and creepy to say the least

Just because you're anti Islam doesn't mean everyone shares your hatred.

The majority of white Christians and Westerners believe Arabic chants emanating from a mosque are creepy, you don't have to believe it if you don't want to

I agree with you The hotel I stay at in Sarajevo is on Azize Sacirbegovic street and there is a mosque right across the street from the hotel, I don't find it bothersome and I have not heard anyone else complain except a Danish politican told me once he understood why the Serbs would want to blow up all the mosques becuase of the sound, obviously he is an idiot.

Mosques and churches should be built in a wilderness or not at all. I hope the latter option prevails.

I believe the building of this mosque will not improve reconciliation between Bosnian peoples.

I believe the building of this mosque will not improve reconciliation between Bosnian peoples. That would be reconstruction, do you know who will benefit the most the people of Banja Luka. This is one of the greatest historical objects in the country that the inbred retarded hill people decided to blow up during the war. Many Serbs in Banja Luka were upset that this happened.
