The Romans he was talking about were the Germanics in control of the city. He never meant it for the Latin. Except maybe very very early on, Greeks never regarded the Romans as barbarians because by they time they even knew what a Roman was, Rome had pretty much conquered and established its dominion over the Greeks.

Thanks everybody for the replies. Rhezus, are you sure all those who could speak Greek were called Greeks by the Greeks? Did the southern Thracians still speak Thracian when they were called Greeks? Also did Herodotus say that Thracians and ancient Macedonians were related? Because if he did than that means the ancient Macedonians were definitely not Greek. Greeks have that problem.. First, how can they call themselves "Romans", when they actually were greek?!.. At same time they pretend to be Macedonians and proud of being being Hellenes! All who could speak greek (hellenistic) were "greek" according to them. Southern Thracians were one other example. In fact greek could be more "mixobarbaroi", if we compaire them with any other European nation. So, why shall we consider their words seriously, when we see facts different from the way they portayed things.

Are you sure of that? Your post is in contradiction with other users'. Which one of you is right? Except maybe very very early on, Greeks never regarded the Romans as barbarians because by they time they even knew what a Roman was, Rome had pretty much conquered and established its dominion over the Greeks.

Who are those ALL? And how are you sure that ALL agree?!.. I know there are sources that say Dorians from the start were ppl of non greek stock. "But were Dorian people Greek by descent? The names of Dorian chieftains show that their origin was actually northern Illyrian where they rushed forth towards Greece. Among Hylleis, Pamphyloi, and the Dymanes, the name of Hylleis (alb. hyllus 'star, sun') is not Greek at all while Dymanes is typically Illyrian, similar to Dymalus : 'two mountains'. Illyrian dynasties used to add the numbers dy- 'two', tri- 'three' in front of their names to symbolize the unique royal line of succession. The method of naming the leaders according to the royal parentage was typical of ancient monarchies. Because Greek people were actually a mixture of invading Achaeans and liberating Dorians.. "www.geocities.com/protoillyrian/tribesActually Hellas was bunch of different stock of ppl, some of which you don't even know their real ancestry. There were other ancient cultures here, long before the polices like Sparta and Athen growing here and there. On the other hand, Greece of today has nothing to do with those ancient balkan soils. You are simply a rich mix of Syrians, Asia Minor tribes and quite an impact of Persians. We see the obvious and not what you fairy tales and myths are "telling" us.

Yes, as example some of the ancient philosphers were of Thracian descent. They, of course, could speak greek as well. Athens authomatically proclaimed them as "Citizen of Athen" and even their names were grecisized, i.e. from Demokrit to Democritus, Pitagor to Pitagoras, etc.
Yes, he did..

Demokrit is very well known because of his historic phrase " Ich bin ein Balgarski!!

lol @ ore voulgare, and lololol @ all the historians in this topic, Rhezus and everyone else that wants to prove that Ancient Greeks were actually modern Albnainas/Fyromians/Bulgarians/Turks etc what do you exactly gain by that? Other than you are showing your inferiority complex, why not try to exalt the important figures in your own history? How many people know about Skenderbeg or Mother Teresa being Albanian? Or Fan Noli, Asdreni, Sami and Naim Frasheri, Ismail Kadare, these are all great writers whose work is phenomenal why not try to get people to know about them and their great work instead of trying to prove that you're Greek? If you want to be Greek that's fine, but don't say you're an ancient Greek, not a modern Greek because modern Greeks are Gypsies/Jews/etc because the truth is you don't have any proof of that. What you do have proof of you don't take advantage of, ever wonder why no one takes Albanians seriously? Think about it.

You need a connection through alphabet, language and land..... us Greeks have it all... We have the perfect story and we have written 'your' story.... it's iron clad....
Oh you can keep your 25 'years' of being famous Skanderbeg... for gods sake.... Stalin's left testicle was more famous than that.

What's your problem grandpa I'm just telling them there's no reason for them to try to claim all ancient Greeks because all they're showing is jealousy. What about Mother Teresa and all those writers I mentioned? IF their work was translated in English and it became popular Albanians will be known for more than crime and corruption.

^^ yeah tell that to your fellow countrymen who are so eager to come to greece i know not of any albanians being eager to go to greece, they do it because after all this time they are inevitably tied dwn, they have a job and a way of life which means a vested interest, many despise greece and many have returned, there are only a handful that have a life long commitment to staying in greece
