This is truly pathetic... and we are digging our hole deeper...
A shipment of some 3,000 tons of American munitions destined for Israel will not pass through the western Greek port of Astakos, Athens and Washington said yesterday, although the reason behind the decision remained somewhat unclear.
In what has become a politically sensitive issue for the ruling New Democracy party, government spokesman Evangelos Antonaros said yesterday that Greece would not allow Astakos to be used as a location from which to transfer the 325 20-foot containers of ammunition from a US ship to a smaller vessel, which would then have taken them to the Israeli port of Ashdod.
However, Pentagon spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Patrick Ryder suggested late Monday that the shipment was canceled because of security concerns related to the conflict in Gaza. But another Pentagon official, Geoff Morrell, told a news conference yesterday that the transfer did not take place because the Greek government “had some objection to offloading the shipment in their country.”

America has no government right now...one comes the other leaves...apart from a decent move it isn't so stupid after all. The Greek government doesn't want more hue and cry by the people...

Antiamericanism is very obvious between Greeks. They only want to play with the Grekoturkish relations and we both like idiots go and buy more and more weapons...but we can't do anything else...the military antagonism is strong and it brings more and more expenses that could have gone for better education and healthcare.

yeah but the worry is unfounded really, think about it, if turkey wanted to invade greece, it could do so at will, they are too powerful, but that's never going to happen, both countries in NATO, greece in the EU, strong ties with Russia, will never happen, Turkey would never make a move, in the current world things like this do not happen, its inconceivable....so why pump money into the army? i don't get it.

I think it drastically changes depending on who is in power! If we were only 2 years into the Bush administrations 8 years I would say it was indeed politically a bad move. Since Obama is coming into office is just a few days and is known to be a Hellenophile then it was a wise political decision. There is absolutely no reason why the U.S has to use Greece for arms transportation when they have a lackey in Turkey. 75% of all weapons to Iraq go through Turkey. So why not just send their aid to Isreal, which doesn't really need it, through Turkey as well. Greece should not support any of the Isreali efforts against the Palestinians. Israel doesn't need the additional weapons anyways.

dude, this is just another diplomatic mishap in a string of confrontations which has brought about a rift,
i'm not contesting the greek decision to not bend over backwards when americans want smth but what i am saying is that its not in greece's best interest to antagonise the country that uplifted greece from famine and starvation, least we forget!
c'mon man, american foreign policy almost never changes, perhaps slight adjustments here and there but nothing too drastic.

If Malta really wanted to invade Greece, it could do so, but the invasion would not be a guaranteed success.

libofshe "yeah but the worry is unfounded really, think about it, if turkey wanted to invade greece, it could do so at will, they are too powerful" -------------------------------------------------------- Theory and action are opposites. If Tourkey felt that could invade Greeks islands or Greek mainland... they would have done it 1000 times until now. They did it in Cyprous. They shaw they can do it due to the fact that Greek society was completely in chaos due to junta.. and they did it. They were never afraid UN etc etc. If they have the chance to grap land... they do it. They're like jakals.. I believe it means something when you see Turks be in theory and not in action. They know very well that even if they win... who wants that victory? Even if you're a winner... what are you gonna celebrate if your country is in stone age from the bombings? They know that well... believe me.. they're Turks. PS. and dont forget.... the Kurds. A war between Turkey and Greece will be their ONLY chance to fight in Anatolia and to create Kurdistan. Turks know that... Kurds know that... we know that. So... I doubt a lot about their military power. They promote it... but I dont know if marketing helps in war conditions. Americans promote very much their military power.. but promotion didnt helped them in Vietnam and Iraq.... Real war is not Hollywood
