patrinos - Basil was a armenian. It isn't proved, its a theory among the others. But it does't have any meaning. Let me explain...if Papandreou becomes a prime-minister who is half American we won't be less Greeks Armenia was never a main part of the empire as Greece and Minor Asian coasts,Pontos and Cappadocia were. They had another dogma that still today "annoy" us down in Jerusalem... Vasileios was surely an Orthodox and if he was of Armenian descent surely he abandoned his previous dogma and language so he could rise in the Greek community of Polis. Greeks have till today plenty of myths about Palaiologos, Constantinoupolis,Digenis Akritas etc etc. During the Revolution many times Palaiologos Konstantinos was refferd as " Our King(Vasileus)". For example I can't say that Ottoman Empire didn't have Turkish character because some Sultans' mothers were Greeks, Albanians,Servians etc. I think that this is done only by nations with poor history like these of our neighbors, including yours.

The very name "Byzantine Empire" was, in fact, coined as an insult. The phrase "Byzantine Empire" was coined and popularized by French scholars in the seventeenth century, long after the Empire had passed on into history. A major popularizer of the term "Byzantine" was Charles-Louis de Montesquieu, an influential figure of eighteenth century intellectual life. In truth, the people who lived in the "Byzantine Empire" never called themselves "Byzantine" as a national name. The word "Byzantine" found occasional employment to indicate an inhabitant of Constantinople, but to apply the name to the whole Empire would be analogous to calling all the French by the name "Parisian." In respective to their national identity, the people of the entire know themselves to be Romans, nothing more and nothing less. Clifton R. Fox Good. Every one agrees with that.

More.. It was a double distortion and a double big lie: a distortion of Ancient Greek reality, and a distortion as well of Modern Greek reality! Invented nationalism is expert not only at distorting but also at forgetting - indeed, forgetting is probably the prime mechanism for distorting. The original distortion of the inventention a new Greece in the image of Periclean Athens, excluding the Church - not to mention the Byzantine heritage, folk songs, and the Tourkokratia - was so gross that it could not continue without revision during the yers!

Thats bullchit.. The city was built upon an earlier Greek city of Byzantio... which was ruled by a King with the same name... Many places in the world are called after their capitals..for instance Mexico city to Mexico the country.... IF we listen to the garbage that is spewed in here by some morons..... then we have to believe.. -that the term "greek' was an insult -that the term Byzantium was an insult... Some of you should be ashamed of yourselves for even breathing the same air as regular folks.

Patrinos, romaoi was the term used by bisantians as they consider themself as descendent of Roman empire, kostandin dragani at the last batlle when he was speaking the last words to the fighters consider themself and the others as the last romans in the world, ostrogorsky Today in the balcans are several pop. called aromanoi by greecs that have an arcaic latin language, so stop sayin anbased things regarding to aromanoi. While regarding Basil II he was a macedonian slav origin and at this time its nothing for some king to masacre the ouwn pop.the nazionalism didnt exist at this age , by the way the macedonian are slavmixed at th 6 sc while the bulgarian came 3 sc after lead by khan Krup. And the last thing, Dont worry for our history we arent stel your country history we have one and its full with heroes fighting for fredom from the antichity till 1998-99
