Revenge-Montenegrin style
MONTENEGRIN REVENGE
IN THE WILD WEST COUNTRY
Old American Western Stories usually are of Indian and Robbers so I was astounded when I found this item: “Revenge – Montenegrin Style,” by Grace Roffey Pratt. Simply put, an Austrian Count name of Stanislaus Felipowich (Stanislav Filipovic) and a Montenegrin native known as "the King" rounded up 1,000 natives of the Balkans and brought them to the wilds of America to a little town named Taft, Montana in 1907. Their job was to build a tunnel for the Northern Pacific Railway from St. Joe, Idaho and Taft, Montana.
AND THEY DID!
Folks, Evidently, the Montenegrins were in the majority. They brought to America their dress, habits, bedrolls called "turkeys" and all their quaint customs. Their leader called "the King" took care of all of their pay, banking their money, wrote their letters and looked after every one of his following. Unfortunately, others did not take lightly to the manner the Montenegrins were organized. When American supervisors were unhappy, the workers would go to "the King" and he was a very powerful advocate. Unfortunately, a foreman name of Reddy Hess decided he had enough and murdered "the King". The Montenegrins revolted as one could expect. After having given their fallen leader his due respect and burying him in the Taft, Montana Cemetery in the customary Greek Catholic rites, the crowd decided to take appropriate action. What they did and how they gained revenge-You gotta buy the story!
