OK, this has probably been discussed so many times but from personal expirience when I was visiting Montenegro I found that it was a totally different minded popullation to that of Serbia. Peope were happy to greet me into their new country even though they knew I was Albanian and they also referred to me as " Komshi". There was also the happening of a woman suddenly speaking to me in her native language and I replied in English " I'm sorry I do not speak Serbian " and she replied with a frown... " oh no... this not Serbian, this is Montenigrin" and those were exact words she said to me. I saw very little Serbian influence in Montenegro other than you share the same religious beliefs and at a restaurant I went, I heard the Serbian Eurovision entry playing on the background. People were very welcome I thought. I think most people in Montenegro are happy to be with their new identity and their new state. All of a sudden it happens that Montonegro is one of the 2 countries in the Balkans that have the highest economic growth in the Balkans together with Albania. I just don't see how Serbs can't just be happy for their Montenigrin "brothers" and not try to always own them. But anyhow, Thats my opinion. Montenegro is a beautiful country and is also one of the 2 countries together with Croatia that I would really love to visit again.

Good for you, glad you had a good experience. Montenegro is actually pretty split, about the Montenegrins consider themselves Serbian while the other half insists on just being Montenegrin. Serbians from Serbia ARE different though, socially and culturally. Most are happy that Montenegro seperated from Serbia and that Serbia is its own country with its own emblems now (instead of being called Yugoslavia). It is actually the Serbs in Montenegro who were most pissed off about this, but I think they have accepted things now (they are still fighting to maintain the Serbian character of Montenegro though).

We always went to Montenegro like every summer for up to 2 months every time, before we moved to the US in 1999. It kind of feels like home to me, being there so much, staying with family friends, etc. I wouldn't mind living there.

they are still fighting to maintain the Serbian character of Montenegro though.
They are fighting a losing battle. The Montenegrin identity will further cement itself amongst the average citizen now that the country is independent.

In reality you are completely wrong. Montenegro has the most ridiculously biased media in all of the former Yugoslavia. It also has by far the most corrupt government of the former Yugoslav countries. As this stranglehold inevitably loosens the people will start to see the Serbian reality a lot more. I think that after the independence elections in Montenegro, there were actually more self declared Serbs in the next census, even though you also probably had Albanians & other minorities declaring Montenegrin identity in higher numbers. Serbian strength & morale is probably at the lowest possible point it can be at the moment... which also means things can only get better.

i don't mean this in a insulting way, montenegrins compared to other slavic brothers in exyug, are by far the most arrogant and rude. many i've interacted with talk a lot of smack(mostly lies) and can't back it up. to me you guys are more connected to the malisors than serbians.

The 'Montenegrin' identity is merely a concept and has no relavence to objective reality. In fact, all national identities are this way. These are concepts people have about themselves and other people and are typically the result of scar tissue culture.
There is nothing inherently different in the human anatomy of a Montenegrin or any other dweller of the Balkans , or Europe , or the world. I find it funny that people argue over these identities as if any of them had a grain of truth. Its like arguing what flavor of ice cream is better. Its purely aesthetic and bigoted.

Here the Montenegrin Identity:
Illyrians as Dorians Carleton S. Coon found a connection between the Illyrians and the Dorians based on his anthropological analyses of the Montenegrin population and the Sfakian population in Crete. Coon discovered that Montenegro is a highly concentrated Illyrian racial zone and that the Sfakians are directly descended from Doric tribes that invaded Crete from the direction of Macedonia and Illyria. Moreover, he discovered that Montenegrins and Sfakians shared many similarities in stature, appearance, language, national costume, belligerent tendencies, tribal orders, and vendettas.
