Macedonian Party May Ask Albania to Block NATO Bid Skopje | 11 August 2009 | DPA leader Menduh Thaci DPA leader Menduh Thaci Albania should block Macedonia’s NATO accession if Skopje continues to neglect its large Albanian community, the head of an ethnic Albanian party in Macedonia says. Menduh Thaci, the head of the opposition Democratic Party of Albanians, DPA, told a Monday press conference that he considered asking Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha to block Macedonia's NATO membership bid during their meeting in Tirana last week. “I changed my mind, scared that he could misunderstand me”, Thaci told the media, “but I made up my mind to mention this to him the next time we meet”. Thaci, whose party was previously part of the ruling coalition, now accuses his former coalition partner, the ruling centre-right VMRO-DPMNE, of promoting ethnocentric policies that favour the ethnic Macedonian majority. Albania and Macedonia were initially slated to receive an invitation to enter NATO in 2008, but Macedonia was left out due to Greece's unwillingess to allow its neighbour to enter the alliance while the countries' naming dispute remains unresolved. With the eighth anniversary of the Ohrid peace accord approaching, Thaci reiterated that he believes that stipulations therein concerning the promotion of the ethnic Albanian community's rights remain unfulfilled. The accord ended the 2001 ethnic Albanian insurgency and ostensibly paved the way for biculturalism. “This agreement doesn’t function”, Thaci said, adding that a superseding deal should be created that would supplement the accord. Despite recent calls from the EU ambassador to the country, Erwan Fouere, that the DPA not boycott parliament, Thaci said that his party has already taken this decision and would not be participating in the legislature from next week “until this government falls”. The DPA boycott will not harm the government's work since the party has only three deputies in the 120-seat parliament. However, observers are concerned that the move could harm the country’s EU accession process by ruining the impression that positive inter-party dialogues exist. This is one of the benchmarks that the EU requires of Macedonia. Thaci's critique comes only a couple of months before the European Commission publishes its annual report on the country’s reform progress this autumn. Skopje hopes the report will include a recommended date for the start of EU accession talks. Since Macedonia became an EU candidate in 2005, the EC has refused to recommend the start of the talks three years in a row, citing insufficient reforms. a new comer should not have that right to veto anyone...it should be possible only after several months or a few year...
now, Albania entered NATO, fine !...but low profile is better,
Macedonia will be pressured on all sides,...poor country

I have less and less respect for these alb politicians from macedonia. They contribute fvck all to the cause, then ask other albanians to start some shit on their behalf. Where was Thaci's patriotism when he was in the ruling coalition? Now that he is not in power, he is asking for drastic steps... double standards.
A state has strategies, diplomatic reputation, agreements, etc... to keep in mind. Tirana should take drastic actions only after the albanians in macedonia present a united front, and after they exhaust all legal and diplomatic channels within macedonia... Then the EU and NATO has to be won over in the issue (kept updated, asked to take a diplomatic stand...). Only after that should Albania consider vetoing our confused neighbour.

Albanian politicians in Macedonia are opportunist (like many Balkan politicians) that do not care for it's own people. Imer Selmani for example, had a good chance to advance in the 2nd round and he even received a decent amount of the Slav vote. Unfortunately there were 2 other Albanians competing with him.

Albania just became a member, it wouldn't be to smart to play c0cky so soon. A low profile this far in the game is better, and the veto could be put to better use against other states instead of Macedonia, which all Nato members wish to see within the alliance. Greece had to deal with some shyt for blocking Macedonia's entry due to the whole name dispute ... I don't see the benefits in this. Macedonia will be an Albanian puppet state soon enough as it is.

guys, guys....its not VETO, its not having a CONSENSUS Listen, right now Bulagria is not exactly happy with the skopians either. What we should do is work them over threesome style. That way, it would be impossible to be accused of derailing their NATO process since all their neighbors are having issues with them. They need to be gang raped by Greece, Albania, and Bulgaria. Then they might see the light

This would hurt Albania's reputation more than it would help us.

Plus, their veto is assured from Greece and Bulgaria. What good will our do, just add one more country to the list? Maybe our efforts should be spend into Kosovo more.

I don't recall that Albania has done any thing for Albanians in Macedonia in the past 19 years. So I guess threesome is out of the question.

Lexoni ketu se si po diskriminohen Shqipetaret
I mohohet shkolla, kerkon ndihme nga Berisha
E Hene, 17 Gusht 2009

Slavs (more specifically Orthodox Slavs) are scum. The quicker the Albanians unite politically and put away their power issues, the better.

The best thing you can do in all of your history is to veto them. Do it! We support you.
