24 September 2009 Turkish newspaper Milliet claims that Turkey and Russia have reached an agreement for Moscow to recognize the North Cyprian Turkish republic, which is recognized until now only by Ankara. In return the Turkish government had taken the responsibility to recognize the independence of Abkhazia. There have been talks about such deal for a while in both the Russian and Turkish media but the topic became really current after the visit of Unal Chevikoz, foreign minister assistant in Abkhazia. After the war in August 2008 Russia recognized the seceded from Georgia separatist republics South Ossetia and Abkhazia by taking over the security of their borders. The international community on the other hand, supports the territorial wholeness of Georgia.
Another fact speaks also about the warming relations between Russia and Turkey. Petrol mastodon Rosneft was ready to ensure petrol for the pipeline Baku-Jayhan, also claims Milliet. Cyprian newspaper Politis quotes Abkhazian “foreign minister” Sergey Saba, who said: “If they recognize us, we will recognize them”. He also publicly confirmed that he has contacts with public representatives of Northern Cyprus.
Other Cyprian newspapers claim that Cyprian president Dimitris Christofias was going to announce from the stage of the UN Common Assembly, that if Turkey withholds from provocative actions, the Cyprian problem will be solved as early as this fall. Today, in New York, Christofias will have a meeting with UN General Secretary Ban Ki-Moon and with the UN Swedish chairmanship.
