Montenegrin independence referendum, 1992
The Montenegrin independence referendum of 1992 was the first independence referendum for Montenegrin independence. 421,549 citizens were registered voters.
Campaign Prime Minister Milo Ðukanoviæ spent a lot of time campaigning amongst the people, expressing the necessity of a common Yugoslav state with other Serbs. Although not generally changing the outcome, DPS-controlled state propaganda had affected greatly by pushing the Federal option and misrepresenting the independenists.
Milo Ðukanoviæ's outspoke during the campaign: We are proud of our Serb origin and Montenegrin statehood, the proud history of the Serbian people. That's why we believe in a common future and prosperity.
With the victory of the unionist bloc, he concluded: Because of eternal brotherhood links; common blood spilled in wars, because of the eternal dream of the best Montenegrins and Serbians, for a brightly common better future, Montenegro willingly chose to live in a common state with Serbia with open heart.
The Albanian national minority boycotted the election, including the pro-sovereignist orientated Montenegrins.

What a difference 20 years makes. What a change in one man. Just about everyone voted to remain a part of Yugoslavia. It was unthinkable that Serbia & Montenegro would be two seperate countries. The west was very successful in destroying the Serbian people!

once again blaming someone else huh? So all of them must be western agents working to destroy the holy superior serb nation those people don't want to be associated with a nation that started 4 wars, tried genocide and ethnic cleansing on 3 (THREE) of its neighbour peoples and is still in denial after a decade I am not surprised there are so many Montenegrins out there who are offended if you call em serb don't forget to blame Winnie the pooh and his gang, they too played some role in your division lol

These people were among those who committed the worst of the crimes. Montenegrins were just as radical if nor more so than Serbs themselves. All they do now is hide their crimes behind their newly attained title "Montenegrin". At least the Serbs still have their own name, however much stigma it brings. These people are the biggest cowards in the Balkans.

Crna Gora rocks! I don't care what any of you say about it. Knock it all you want but quite frankly I'm tired of hearing/reading comments on how they're "selling out to the west", blahblahblah.... you know what? Good! Good for them trying to move forward instead of backwards. All the negative views on Crna Gora some of you fools posses is just crap propaganda you've been fed. And just because I say this doesn't mean I'm anti-serb or anything bullshit like that. Good for Crna Gora to be independent. They can't rely on Belgrade/Serbia forever. It's too bad really. It would be good if both republics were together & could have better ties with each other but bad politics get in the way. What can you do?

I agree 100 percent dusko. Bad politics have split the serbs apart more than anything else.
Most serbs trace themselves and their families back to CG. To me, we are one and the same people, whether its from CG, serbia proper, vosa, kosovo, whatever. Its too bad that we allowed ourselves to get spilt up.

Too bad people in the Balkans can be so stupid & have extreme disagreements amongst one another. It's the age old divide & conquer my friends. Another thing is there's too much living in the past among our peoples. Time we put some age old differences aside & move forward.

Dusko, what you consider yourself as? Both Serb & Crna Gorac but I was born there & my family is from there so therefore I'm Crna Gorac. But we're so close. I also consider myself a slavophile.

Illir, I think that its a part of culture and mentality. After 400 years of ottoman rule, most of our people looked into the past in search of glory and history etc. This is a product of that

We haven't been ruled by them for a very long time. We lean more towards the west anyways.

They are basically Serbs ashamed of their identity.. who decided the easy way out was to make up another.

The west was very successful in destroying the Serbian people! You exaggerate the wests role. Especially sicne at certain times post-2000 keeping the union alive was in the wests interests. Independence is the prodiuct of conflict leaderships, the gross idiocy of the union (honestly a federal state of entities with two completely different economies and where one is 11+ times larger then the other) and the fact that in 2006 the tourist economy of Montenegro benefited more without Serbia then said eocnomy benefit in 1991 with Serbia. The latter being the msot import. Hell if you lived in CG and owned property near the coast you'd vote for independence. What more moeny, doubled property price by having CG independent (even if led by criminals like Djukanovic) vs. less growth, less smoney by being associated with politically unstable Serbia.

All good points radovic.
The EU's visa abolishment will be a big problem for Dukanovic and Co. Especially if Serbs from Serbia start skipping Budva and Kotor for the beaches of Greece, which from what I hear, are the most beautiful around. Furthermore, add more tourism to croatia, and the situation doesn't far well in the long run for CG.
Personally I love it in CG, and I would rather go there to a serbian (if you can call it that nowadays) beach and vacation than another.
I have been to Budva and St Stefan and it really is gorgeous.
