Airline slammed for 'meat-hungry cougar' ad
09:00 AEST Mon Jan 18 2010 By ninemsn staff
An advertisement offering cougars free rugby tickets to help in their hunt for "slabs of meat" has been slammed as "appalling".
But Air New Zealand, which is responsible for the online advertisement, says the promotion was meant to be light-hearted and there are no plans to pull the campaign, the NZ Herald reports.
The ad, on Air New Zealand's Grabaseat website, offers women aged over 35 the chance to win tickets to next month's Wellington Sevens match.
The company said that cougars selected to attend the game will be given costumes and noise-making equipment.
The ad shows a mature woman who has "not tasted fresh meat for days" dragging a young man to an inner-city apartment.
Rape Prevention Education director Kim McGregor told the NZ Herald the ad was objectionable on several levels and that some Air New Zealand staff were concerned about the promotion.
"They find it degrading and that it is encouraging potentially harmful behaviour, so my question is why is our national carrier promoting sexually predatory behaviour?"
"We have also had complaints from male survivors who have been raped by women and they are very distressed that their situation is being laughed at and made out to be humorous."
A spokeswoman for Grabaseat, Sunil Unka, admitted to the NZ Herald that complaints had been made about the ad, but she said it would continue.
"We have certainly received some feedback ... it's mainly from women who are over 35 and have taken a bit of offence to it and felt it was an unfair kind of blanket comment."
