Nice Pictures Nikola,
I have a question, how are paking spaces in skopje ? Do they have enough space ? do they provide underground parking garages ? Or do ppl park on sidewalks ?
Regarding the tower, Restoration is nice. Is it being restored to original specs ? Do they have records of how the tower looked before ?
sometimes its better to start modernizing late. Athens modernizing took place in 60's - 70's and it wasnt done to well. At least for skopje you can look at other ppl to see what to avoid and how to make it better.

Nice Pictures Nikola, I have a question, how are paking spaces in skopje ? Do they have enough space ? do they provide underground parking garages ? Or do ppl park on sidewalks ? People do park on sidewalk but it's not that bad from what I saw. But with every new building that's going up, they are building an underground parking as well so eventually, there will be less cars scattered everywhere. Regarding the tower, Restoration is nice. Is it being restored to original specs ? Do they have records of how the tower looked before ? No, the fortress itself has been in ruins for a long time so there are no modern pictures of what it used to look like. Just sketches from travellers from centuries ago. Like the one I posted on page two. sometimes its better to start modernizing late. Athens modernizing took place in 60's - 70's and it wasnt done to well. At least for skopje you can look at other ppl to see what to avoid and how to make it better. Very true. Let's hope they learn from other people's mistakes.

I agree ioan. The older buildings are what makes each country unique and gives character. I love the look of Prague for example (from the pictures I've seen). You are absolutely right. I ve been in Prague and let me tell you the pics doesnt do it a justice. Its a magnificent place with large gothic cathedrals and amazing castles. It is an amazing city exactly tnx to its old buildings. This is what I love in Prague. This is what amazes a person. This is why Rome has so many tourists (also Prague). absolutely right. Yes, thats so wrong. And so not right. We in Bulgaria used to have alot of castles, churches, building from medievil period, but most were distructed severely in the Ottomans time. Unfortunately not much have been done by the communists to save those historic buildings, let alone a restoration. The biggest stupidity was that the communists , when building a Koprinka Reservoir , found an ancient Thracian city of Seuthopolis founded by the Thracian king Seuthes III, and the capital of the Odrysian kingdom. They went on with the works and its now underwater.

They went on with the works and its now underwater. That's one thing that Macedonia does very well actually. All the stuff the Ottomans destroyed and the communists never rebuilt, is being restored now. I noticed that when I went to Ohrid, they were restoring a lot of old buildings because, like you said, they know that's what tourists want to come and see. This monastery was only a few years ago in complete ruins, just like this section in the picture below. (I took all of these pictures by the way.) But they are slowly rebuilding it. Once it's all complete it's going to be huge because the ruins cover a very large area. And Ohrid has a fortress that is being restored too. Restoration began in 2003 but it's ongoing. So far they have mainly rebuilt the walls and are now digging the inside. Though it's much smaller than Skopje's, it will still be most impressive once completely restored.

It is nice, isn't it. Once complete it's going to be very attractive for tourists. We in the Balkans (all of us, Greeks, Bulgarians, Albanians, Serbs, etc) have such amazing history, much more amazing than northern Europe, it's about time we showed it off to the rest of the world. A few more restoration projects. See this church in Skopje. It was nothing but ruins not long ago. But it too has almost been restored.

And another fortress, in Strumica this time. Completely left to rot for centuries. But, they are restoring that one too. And when complete, it's going to look like this. Who wouldn't want to go and see that!

Yes, I hope Bulgaria looks at Macedonia and decides to start restoring their old buildings too. Anyway, I just picked up on something. See this picture I took in January 2009? Well, I found one taken in August, only seven months later. Look at the progress!!! I wonder what it looks like now, another seven months later.

And another progress shot from the inside of the castle/fortress in Ohrid. They have dug down quite deep in this section. A better angle to get an idea how impressive the Ohrid castle looks.

Some more new apartment buildings. I may have posted some of these already. I'm going to split these up into multiple posts because 30 posts per page results in too many pictures. We need to get to page 5.

These buildings are actually in Tetovo, not Skopje. But they are built in the same style as the buildings in Skopje.
