You know what's somewhat depressing though? I mean, we are posting all these pictures of Macedonia and how nice certain buildings look but, if you compare anything in the Balkans to the buildings in Paris, for example, they all pale in comparison. The Balkan countries are so far behind it's almost not worth comparing. Even a simple riverside shot, like the one below, looks ten times better than anything in the Balkans. I long for the day that Skopje will be built up to look as good as other western European cities but it's never going to happen I don't think. The picture is so wide I had to split it into two.

That's true. It's sad but at least Macedonia is on the correct path in building a beautiful city. I'm glad they went with this classical style for the city square instead of just a bunch of fancy new glass buildings. These older baroque style buildings look much better to me.

Kristjan dude!!!
Do you use UBUNTU/Linux in school? Does the ministry of Education dictate/advise that you do so?
If yes, I AM VERY VERY VERY IMPRESSED....

no, they do not advise/dictate to use them, the PCs aren't in our property....they belong to the school.... the government install those programs and the operative system before we start using the computers.... that's because Linux is free, and Windows must be buy, but for the all country that's too much.... so they chose Linux..... but it is not that bad....actually it is very good and easy to use...
i am home now....

It might be cost saving, but Linux is actually better than Windows in many ways. It's good that you know how to use it, it teaches you a lot about computers.

Looks like they are also preparing to put up the other two statues on the other side of the bridge.

And a couple of more pictures of the statues for good measure. I like the bases, very classy.

So, we are saying the same thing. Ubuntu is a strategic decision by the ministry of Education !!!! GOOD!!! svaka cast! There is tuxmath and a hell of other software that can teach you anything. I installed tuxmath yesterday for my daughter on FreeBSD and it rocks! Linux and the *BSDs rock!

i guess the global crisis hasn't hit skopje yet, well, maybe next year. There's no way your government can support that kind of construction. While sites built by private investors are probably just laundering their money.

They are hoping the worst is behind them I guess. You're right though, they are going to have to start making some money, not just spend.

Who's paying for all these buildings?? I doubt there is much investors, the people aren't rich..
They should focus on fixing road and transportation. And how about they give a dime to the albanian areas that desperately need fixing up.

Who's paying for all these buildings?? I doubt there is much investors, the people aren't rich.. Most of these are investors from other parts of Europe. Slovenian companies for example are investing quite a lot because they can see that the country will rise to western levels one day. Also, Macedonia is NOT the only place that is being built up like this. Albania and Kosovo are getting even more dramatic upgrades. You should see some of the buildings being built in Pristina. You need to ask where they are getting their money from too. They should focus on fixing road and transportation. And how about they give a dime to the albanian areas that desperately need fixing up. They ARE also building up Albanian majority towns too. I just haven't posted any pictures here because the focus is primarily on Skopje. Here is the new city square for Tetovo that is being planned. And then there''s that largest closed roof shopping mall in Macedonia that will be built in Tetovo. Five star hotel in Tetovo. Render Progress shot from February 2010. You Albanians love to complain about everything it seems. ;D
