Report: Eulex pushes removal of ministers suspected of corruption
Jun 4, 2010, 11:22 GMT
Pristina - The European Union's law enforcement mission in Kosovo (Eulex) wants Prime Minister Hashim Thaci to fire three ministers suspected of corruption, the daily Zeri said Friday.
Quoting unnamed sources, it said that Eulex is conducting the 'sensitive' investigation of the ministers. The three are believed to be involved in corruption, organised crime, embezzlement and the abuse of office.
Two of the ministers are from Thaci's own Democratic Party of Kosovo, while the third is from the Democratic League of Kosovo, a junior partner in Thaci's coalition. The EU deployed Eulex to Kosovo after the former province declared independence from Serbia in 2008 to help its fledgling institutions establish a rule of law.
Eulex raided the offices of Transport Minister Fatmir Limaj in April. He is suspected of abuses in public procurements worth at least 1 million euros (1.2 million dollars). Limaj has denied any wrongdoing.
The Eulex raid and other probes drew fire from Kosovo officials, with Thaci himself accusing the organisation of meddling into affairs that should be handled by local courts.
Zeri reported that Eulex is unwilling to work with local authorities in the investigation.
Kosovo has been on track to independence since NATO ousted Serbian forces from there in 1999. It was governed by a United Nations mission until the declaration of independence in 2008.
Reports by European and UN institutions routinely warn that Kosovo's deeply rooted organised crime and widespread corruption hamper the development of the new country, one of the poorest in Europe.
So this is what independance is all about. gotta laugh at all of this. You don't see Eulex involving themselves in Belgrade, Zagreb or Sarajevo, do you.
