This is official World Cup 2010 - South Africa - Thread Matches are starting tomorrow. 1) Greece is in the same group with Nigeria, republic of Korea (south Korea) as well as eternal heavyweight in soccer in the form of Argentina. Any opinions upon any of the teams Greece is facing and what kind of chances Greece has? Matches are on 12,17 and 22 of June. 2) Serbia is in the same group with Australia, Ghana as well as eternal heavyweight in soccer in the form of Germany. Any opinions upon any of the teams Serbia is facing and what kind of chances Serbia has? Matches are on 13,18 and 23 of June. 2) Slovenia is in the same group with Algeria, ever improving USA as well as eternal heavyweight in soccer in the form of England. Any opinions upon any of the teams Slovenia is facing and what kind of chances Slovenia has? Matches are on 13,18 and 23 of June. Slovenia, Greece and Serbia are only Balkan teams present. Which one of these is deemed stronger versus other ones and has most chance of advancing furthermost of all. Surprising that teams like Croatia and Turkey are absent from the competition (given their soccer history in past decade). Schedule of matches can be found in bellow site www.fifa.com/worldcup/matches/index.html

fifa.com pages on those three teams Greecewww.fifa.com/worldcup/teams/team=43949/index.htmlThe outsiders Greece: The archetypal 'hard nut to crack' under Otto Rehhagel, the 2004 European champions return to world football’s top table for the first time since their debut in 1994. Solid at the back and clinical up front, King Otto's well-drilled charges will be determined to avoid a repeat of that American adventure, which brought three straight defeats. What is more, confidence should be high in the Greek camp after they edged out 2006 quarter-finalists Ukraine in the European Zone play-offs. www.fifa.com/worldcup/standings/group=249724/analysis.htmlSerbiawww.fifa.com/worldcup/teams/team=1902465/index.htmlThe outsiders Serbia: Radomir Antic's men were last out of the hat in the Group D draw but should not be taken lightly. The White Eagles beat France to pole position in their qualifying section, earning Serbia's maiden FIFA World Cup appearance as an independent entity with a 5-0 thrashing of Romania. Any side boasting the talents of Nemanja Vidic, Dejan Stankovic and Milan Jovanovic deserves respect; add the historical pedigree of a nation with ten previous FIFA World Cup appearances (as Yugoslavia, and Serbia and Montenegro) and you have definite dark-horse material. www.fifa.com/worldcup/standings/group=249726/analysis.htmlSloveniawww.fifa.com/worldcup/teams/team=43968/index.htmlThe outsiders Slovenia: Matjaz Kek's team were surprise play-off winners over Russia, Dedic's second-leg strike earning them victory on away goals after a 2-1 reverse in Moscow. Their first major tournaments as an independent nation came at UEFA EURO 2000 and Korea/Japan 2002 but their current squad lacks that know-how, though captain Robert Koren needs no introduction to England as he plays his football at West Bromwich Albion. Their main attacking threat is Milivoje Novakovic, based in Germany with FC Cologne, who hit five goals as they finished second behind Slovakia in their qualifying group. www.fifa.com/worldcup/standings/group=249725/analysis.htmlPS: Within the analysis part each one of the Balkan teams are viewed as outsiders in their own respective groups. Hope they surprise us.

My favorite Balkan teams are without doubt Serbia and Greece and surely I will cheer for Slovenia also.
Non Balkan teams that I have never been impartial to and which are also playing now are of course Italy, Spain and Argentina and to a slightly lesser extent France. (each one is deemed as one of the the top two favorites within their own respective groups with Italy and Spain showing great strength as teams that could easily see them in finals)
Call it a Mediterranean thing I guess. ;D ;D
What are you favorite teams?

Just read analysis on some of the other teams.
Chile seems to be second strongest team in Latin America after Brazil. Cameron followed by Nigeria and Ghana are African powerhouses. Germany followed by Holland and England remain as powerful teams.

Who goes in the next round? Is it the 1st or top 2 teams from a given group?
A) Greece has Argentina (whose coach Maradona has not been proven to be the best of coaches yet in terms of planing and team organizing) and Nigeria. You think that they can fair better then Nigeria (perhaps even Argentina if Maradona messes up as a coach again)? South Korea is there also but it does not appear to pose as a serious threat to Greece.
B) After reading the analysis Serbia might have a somewhat harder group when compared to Greece. It is in the same group with well oiled machine called Germany and African powerhouse of Ghana. Australia appears negligible. All in all similar setup with Greece (exchange Argentina with Germany, Ghana with Nigeria and finally Australia with South Korea).

Mexico just equalized the score with South Africa 1-1 with ten minutes left before possible extensions (if the score remains).
Been watching SA and they have been laid back since the lead which reminds me of Yugo team back in the day which would also tend to do the same instead of trying to widen the lead to a more comfortable number. I figure, if you score the first goal then objective should be to score following one as soon as possible (the other team is perhaps in a state of shock and thus best is to use their emotional state to you own advantage while and if you can).
_______ Update: Score remains 1-1 and game is finished. No extensions apparently (I guess they have to do with later stages of the world cup games)

Admin I give you credit for being honest but seriously your football knowledge is embarrassing, if not insulting to what is the worlds greatest game. Half of those comments are something my mum would say.

I only watch soccer when it is world cup and I do not have photographic memory for things I do not deem important (like something I watch every 4 years). These are honest upfront questions trying to facilitate a discussion versus being concerned how I might appear (emotion that I give little attention to since -like any emotion- it is temporary/volatile and thus void of any real value).
Back to the subject: So what are chances of Serbia passing to the second round... champ?

The gap between footballing nations has narrowed so much that anyone can beat anyone. If you are interested (is that an emotion?) in an answer to this question whilst minimizing emotional bias as much as possible you'd be best to look up the betting odds.

That is funny, another game without a winner in the same group (Uruguay - France 0:0) in a game that was even more dull then the previous one (which I though of as an impossibility before this game).
Interesting how most teams just take it easy on the first game instead of pounding the other team and catching them off guard and thus creating a psychosis with the rest of the teams in the same group.
PS: Arsenije... I am much older then you and thus... should be less emotional... and... more logical... then you... so... your response is expected. Enjoy life youngster.. cause later you will become more calculated... and... turn into me. ;D ;D

Sorry, Admin but I have to agree with Arsenije. Your knowledge on football is extremely limited. The match between South Africa and Mexico was one of the most existing opening games I have watched. Not the highest quality, of course, but when we are talking about a first match, it was exciting. Quite many chances for both teams and a fair result at the end. As for the Balkan teams, I am with Serbia dn Greece but I can't be with Slovenia. It is a country I know almost nothing about and besides, the only two Slovenes I have met were extremely tight arses and definitely not persons I would classify as Balkan in the good meaning of the word.
So is mine, despite the fact Argentina have the most stupid coach ever. They simply have enormous talent and rarely the biggest favourites, such as Spain and Brazil in this world cup, win it. Or may be Holland. High time they achieve something.

RuseBG, reason I put Argentina as favorite is Maradona. I think they have all of their lines great, and Maradona's experience as a player who won world cup might come in handy, that is of course if he transfers that experience to his team good enough.
