Another prominent Arvanite is Constantine Canaris (1793 – 1877) born in Parga, Epirus, and grew up on the island of Psara, close to the island of Chios. Constantine was left an orphan at a young age. As a young boy he became a seaman like most members of his family on the boat of his uncle Dimitris Bourekas. His surname is a nickname, and his original name was Konstantinos Spilioteas. The etymology of his nickname could be derived from the Italian word 'Carenaggio' meaning 'shipyard' or 'dockyard'. From the Greek approximation of 'Karnagios' he became 'Kanarios' and finally 'Kanaris'. There are many theories and debates about his nickname and his place of birth. However many newspapers and encyclopedia articles point out that Parga was his original place of birth. We believe that Kanari is derived from the word ‘kanakari’ which means spoiled boy or only boy in Arvanitika (κανακάρης). Also, Parga during these times was under the Ottoman Empire as a region of Albania in European Turkey and remained under its jurisdiction until 1913. Beside the famous Suliotes, very few examples of Arvanites of Epirus are promoted in Modern Greek historiography for their activities in the War of Independence. Another possible reason why many historians try to identify Kanaris as a Psarian is because unlike most other prominent figures of the War, he had never been initiated in to the Friendly Society. He joined the Revolution on April 10, 1821 in Psara. The island formed its own fleet of ships and the famed seamen of Psara, already known for their successful combats against pirates and their ships, that proved to be effective at full naval war. Constantine soon distinguished himself as a fire ship captain, particularly at Chios, where on the night of June 6, 1822 forces under his command destroyed the flagship of the Turkish admiral Kara-Ali Pasha in revenge for the Chios Massacre. The admiral was holding an Eid (Bayram) celebration, while Kanaris and his men managed to place a fire ship next to it. When the flagship's powder store caught fire, all men aboard were instantly killed. The Ottoman casualties comprised 2000 men, both naval officers and common sailors, as well as Kara-Ali himself. The Egyptian fleet captured Psara on June 21, 1824. A part of the population managed to flee the island, but those who didn't were either sold into slavery or slaughtered. The island was deserted and surviving islanders were scattered through Southern Greece. Ibrahim Pasha of Egypt was virtually undefeated until the Battle of Navarino of October 20, 1827. Then the Turkish-Egyptian fleet was destroyed by the combined naval forces of Britain, France and Russia, that had taken Greece under their protection. At the end of the War of Independence, Constantine became an officer of the new Greek Navy and reached the rank of Admiral, later becoming a prominent politician and as a prime Minister serving five total terms until his death in 1877.

"Konstantinos Spilioteas" !!what a shkip sound!!! like his kids' names Nikolaos, Themistocles, Thrasyvoulos, Miltiades ,Lykourgos Maria,Aristides !!!! geg names! ;D And even if he was born in Parga, Parga these period was 100% Greek until they were driven out by Ali Pasha, in order to bring his chams there... 120 years later...Cham colonists returned to their original places in skiperia...
