He was shot in the head by unidentified men after midnight on Saturday and left in a critical condition, reports said. Mr Tatlises, 58, had just left the offices of private Turkish channel Beyaz TV with his spokeswoman, who was also hit. They were both taken to hospital and underwent surgery. The singer, known as Emperor and one of Turkey's biggest stars, had just left a TV studio shortly after midnight, and was about to leave by car when he was attacked. Iconic Turkish singer Tatlıses shot, fighting for life
Monday, March 14, 2011 ISTANBUL - Daily News with wires
İbrahim Tatlıses. DHA photo Internationally known Turkish singer İbrahim Tatlıses was clinging to life late Monday after being shot in the head in Istanbul’s Şişli’s district, an attack that occurred shortly after midnight Sunday.
Tatlıses was leaving the Beyaz TV Channel studio building in Maslak Nurol Plaza, where he was filming a program, when unknown assailants in a black car opened fire with long-barreled weapons before fleeing the scene.
The singer was shot in the head and his assistant Buket Çakıcı, who was accompanying him, was hit in the shoulder. Tatlıses’ bodyguards brought the injured singer and his assistant to the Private Levent Hospital in the singer’s car.
Following the administration of first aid, Tatlıses and Çakıcı were transferred to Maslak Acıbadem Hospital, where the singer underwent surgery for around 45 minutes before he was taken to an intensive-care unit. Doctors said his health condition was still critical and he underwent a second surgery around 3 a.m.
“The singer remains in critical condition. We have been able to reduce the swelling in his brain to an acceptable level. We have induced a coma, but we plan to wake him toward the morning. Another [scan] will be done tomorrow morning. We will make the final decision to awaken him depending on its outcome,” said İlhan Elmacı, a neurosurgeon.
The doctor said there was a risk of permanent damage, but the main aim was to eradicate the vital risk, adding that surgery has been done to prevent permanent damage that could develop over time. “When he arrived at the hospital, the left side of his body was paralyzed and many consequent operations were done. Right now, no surgery is required. We will see his final condition with the [scan],” Elmacı said.
Asked whether Tatlıses was shot with one bullet, the doctor said the Forensic Medicine Institute would determine that answer. According to Elmacı, serious damage had occurred in the singer’s brain. “At the point of impact in his skull, there were many cracks. There was bleeding between the cerebral cortex and the brain, yet there wasn’t bleeding inside of his brain,” he said. “Right now, the bleeding has stopped. We have a very experienced team reducing the brain pressure. The process of sleeping is handled under our control.”
The area of the brain where the singer was hit does not involve speech functions, said the doctor, saying that Tatlıses would not have difficulty retaining his famous voice. “He might have some loss of power, but I don’t think that he will have a physical problem,” he said. “Our first priority is to get him upgraded from critical condition. Afterwards, we will make a plan of how we can fix the body’s functions; that will take a year.”
Tatlıses’ family and fans are anxiously waiting in the hospital, the doctor said, adding that nobody but medical personnel can enter the intensive care unit. “Rumors saying that people are entering the intensive health unit are a lie. He is under our control in the intensive health unit,” Elmacı said.
The armed attack on the singer involved at least two people, said Public Security Branch Office teams that are investigating security cameras and MOBESE cameras around the buildings. According to information obtained so far, four bullets hit Tatlıses’ car. Four bullet traces were found around the buildings and 11 empty cases were recovered from the scene of the attack.

The violent times of a ‘sweetvoiced’ Turkish singer
Monday, March 14, 2011 ISTANBUL - Hürriyet Daily News
İbrahim Tatlıses. Famous Turkish Arabesk singer İbrahim Tatlıses, whose adopted surname means “sweet voice,” is also a producer, movie director, songwriter, scriptwriter and businessman who was born in the southeastern province of Şanlıurfa in 1952.
Until the mid-1970s, Tatlıses toiled as a constructor worker. After his fantastic voice was discovered in 1977, however, he began climbing the stairs of success.
He began his music career with the folk song “Ayağında Kundura” in 1977 and soon achieved the same success in Yeşilçam, the Turkish cinema industry. Later, he also began starring on his own TV show, the İbo Show and shot music videos for other celebrities.
Despite his unquestionable talent, Tatlıses has never strayed far from controversy. In 1981, he was arrested for insulting the police at the İzmir Fair and was sentenced to jail time. Nine years later, he fell into a dispute with producer Şehmuz İlgin because of a record they were collaborating on; following the argument, Tatlıses’ villa in Istanbul’s tony Etiler neighborhood was torched. The singer was also shot in the leg while on stage at a music hall in Istanbul.
Tatlıses ran as an independent deputy in Şanlıurfa in 1991; he started his ultimately unsuccessful election campaign by firing five shots into the air.
Later, he also faced narcotics charges along with other celebrities in a high-profile cocaine case before being acquitted in 1994.
He was also taken into custody on April 8, 1995, during the circumcision ceremony for his nephew at the Hilton Hotel in Istanbul because he “opened fire in a residential area.”
One year later, his nephew, Fevzi Tatlı, killed Ahmet Toptan in Şanlıurfa – Tatlıses had been in an ongoing disagreement with the latter. Two years later, Abdullah Uçmak opened fire on a car carrying Tatlıses but the singer escaped.
Tatlıses also became embroiled in a contract with his previous manager, Hasan Bora, in 1999 due to a woman called Şule Çatak. In turn, Bora’s music company was raided by Tatlıses’ son Ahmet Tatlı, his brother, Hüseyin Tatlı, and other men. When two unlicensed guns were found in the car of the singer on Oct. 6, 2000, he was taken into custody, where he told the Chief Prosecutor’s Office that he needed the guns due to threats from retired pilot Nusret Ertürk.
Meanwhile, his ex-wife, Derya Tuna, was shot in her left leg while leaving a rehearsal at Günay Restaurant in Istanbul on Oct. 14, 2002.
Tatlıses also has business interests that include bus companies, food services and publishing.

Doesn't he make enough money with his music and films to not put his nose in unhealthy businesses?

This is very sad to hear, Tatlises and Müslüm Gürses are two of the great Turkish singers and my personal favorites. Raki tastes a little better with "Firat" and "Dağlarda Kar Olsaydım".
I couldn't find the version that Tatlises sings, I like that better and he hits a higher note which makes it more mournful.

Didem is his personal belly dancer.
He was going to open her a school of dance in Istanbul.
Griever, I don't own any Ibo albums/cds/mp3s, but I think he plays a big part in the arabesk industry... sad for him.

Why should I joke about it? SanliUrfa, where Ibrahim Tatlises is from, they are mainly Mrabic and Kurdish still living in "Asiret" tribes. Once you are chosen to marry one of those men, you can never, ever divorce, or leave them, if you try.... "honour killings".. Ibrahim Tatlises says he is Arab sometimes, and Kurdish sometimes... his last GF tried to leave him Now she has disappeared, she said On TV Ibo was hounding her and hunting her.

DY,
I only have a couple of his songs on cd's, and I didn't know he was such a shady person in real life. Whenever my (turkish and albanian) friends and I want drinking music, we just go to turkishmusic.org and listen from there. And I am a big fan of Muslum Baba myself, followed by Tatlises, Ferdi Tayfur, Adnan Senses, etc, also I like a lot of kanun and antik muzik
