Turkish Authorities Give Back Large Area of Land to Greek Community of Istanbul Turkish authorities gave back to the Greek Orthodox foundation based in Istanbul an area of 98 acres situated close to Kandilli, in the Asian part of northern Bosphorus. This area was attached by Turkish officials illegally and after so many years, the Turkish state has decided to give it back to the Greek Orthodox community of Istanbul. This is a rather expensive plot of land as the broader region is regarded one of the Turkish capital’s most luxurious. Pantelis Vingas, representative of the non-Islamist minorities and active member of the Greek community of Istanbul, commented that “over the past time, Turkish authorities have made significant decisions, making clear their government’s intention to change everything they have promised to do in regards to Istanbul-based minorities’ freedoms and rights.” He stressed also the fact that “the Greek community of Istanbul wants to thank Turkish officials for this move and wish that they continue with their positive efforts in several other sectors,” so that Turkey’s minorities can live peacefully. ..............................................................

Dogus Of Turkey To Buy Four Marinas In Greece
Dogus Holding AS, a Turkish company with interests in banking, construction and tourism, will buy four marinas that Greece is selling to raise cash, Milliyet reported, citing Group Chief Executive Husnu Akhan. Istanbul-based Dogus applied to the Greek tourism ministry for clearance to acquire the marinas in Athens, Corfu Island, Lefkas Island and the Peloponnese for 20 million euros ($25 million), Akhan said, according to the newspaper. The marinas have a total anchorage capacity of 3,755, about 50 percent more than the company’s capacity in Turkey, Akhan said. Dogus said on April 30 that it had bought Marina Dalmacija and Marina Borik in Croatia.

Turkey’s Religious Affairs Directorate Mehmet Gormez Visits Ecumenical Patriarch in Istanbul Turkey’s top Muslim cleric, Religious Affairs Directorate Mehmet Gormez, urged the re-opening of Orthodox clergy schools during a landmark visit paid to the Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I on Thursday. “The fact that any religious community in this nation has to depend on other countries to raise their own clerics just does not befit the grandiosity of this country,” said Mehmet Gormez. Whatever religious rights Muslims enjoy in Turkey should also be available to the followers of any other religion, Gormez told journalists after his rare visit to Bartholomew. “If we get the permission today, we can make the school operational tomorrow,” the Ecumenical Patriarch said following Gormez’s call to the Turkish government. Bartholomew expressed his gratitude to the Turkish spiritual leader for his supportive stance on matters of religious freedom. “Our government has a positive attitude (toward re-opening of the theology school), that’s what we want to be believe,” Gormez noted. The meeting between the Muslim and the Orthodox leaders was of great historical significance and came in response to Bartholomew’s visit to Gormez a year ago. Despite the positive atmosphere during the talks, follow-up actions in the matter of the Halki Theological School remain to be seen.

Galatasaray President Ünal Aysal’s love story with Fani Grammatikogianni of Greek origin looks rather like a romantic fairytale. The happy couple got married and had a child six months ago.
71-year old Aysal met Fani Grammatikogianni in Geneva six years ago, and they fell in love at first sight. The two of them have spent their lives in Geneva, Athens and Istanbul and now are sharing moments with the newest addition to their family, Alin, who was born in the Swiss city a few months ago.
The couple is currently enjoying their vacation in Greece cruising in their super-luxurious 50-meter-long yacht. Their cruise reportedly commenced from Myconos and will continue to the Sporades and Chalkidiki.

Thousands of Turkish people appear to have chosen the Greek islands for this summer’s vacations, especially after the Greek state’s decision to make the Visa granting process much easier.
The Greek islands most attractive to Turkish visitors are the eastern ones including Kos, Lesvos, Samos and Chios.
“Most visitors we have are of Turkish descent,” said Aris Lazaris, a tour agent on Lesvos island, who has noticed a 100% increase in reservations made by our neighbors while in contrast bookings by other countries have decreased by 50%.
Manager of a famous Chios-based hotel, Mr Petros Fengoudakis, commented that “we had Turkish visitors in the past but they used to come for one-day-trips only. Now they are staying longer.”
