Summary
Turning Virtual Reality into Virtual Profits.
Most investors still don’t understand what Facebook’s new product even is, and therefore have no idea of what the promise or the potential are.
Every market that will generate income, previously existed, but will now be expanded and tapped with an iTunes efficiency.
This article is an introduction and primer on the possibilities.
In 2014, Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) purchased a small company with an innovative new product. At $2 billion ($400 million in cash, and 23 million shares of Facebook stock) many viewed this as an expensive, even exorbitant acquisition. But, what if Facebook bought this small device company before anyone else realized that it too held the potential to become a new, disruptive, product category, including the strong possibility of quickly growing its own walled ecosystem? An ecosystem that will quickly grow to generate billions of dollars in profits the first year of its commercial release and exponential growth every year for many years thereafter. I believe that is exactly what Facebook has accomplished. One projected estimate is that Facebook will generate more than 7 billion dollars in revenue by 2018 from this one product alone. This estimate may turn out to be laughingly conservative.
You are probably going to groan when I disclose exactly what this device is, but that's exactly the point I am trying to make. All of us are vastly underestimating the profit potential of this recent acquisition by Facebook.
First A Look At The Obvious
"March 25, 2014 - Facebook today announced that it has reached a definitive agreement to acquire Oculus VR, Inc., the leader in immersive Virtual Reality technology, for a total of approximately $2 billion."
"The acquisition price reflects the enormous progress that Oculus VR has made in developing its business, making virtual reality a viable system and creating a virtual reality ecosystem. "
What exactly is an immersive, virtual reality technology? Well the short and simple answer is, it's a small, very high definition color video system that you wear like a pair of goggles and headphones combined. The industry term, is Head Mounted Display (HMD). To quote Palmer Luckey, Oculus Rift's inventor and founder, it's "Television on your head." What makes Oculus Rift a dramatic departure from these simplistic descriptions is, when you place this video display over your eyes, your brain is neurologically hacked, transporting you into another world. You will be able to look around within complete 360° stereoscopic 3-D visuals and hear 3-D high definition audio or again the industry term here is, accurate, sound stage imaging. By placing the Oculus headset over your eyes you will not feel like you're viewing the scene above, but that you are actually present at this location. According to one of Oculus Rift's engineers,"This is the first time that we've succeeded in stimulating parts of the human visual system directly."
With the simple act of placing the Oculus on your head, you become neurologically immersed within whatever environment the video feed is displaying. If the video feed is a gaming environment you are no longer looking at the game you are playing, you are in the game you're playing! Watch the movie Tron or at least the trailer linked on this site if you still don't understand the concept.
