The Kingdom of Trebizond controlled the trade routs throughout the Black sea. The Pontians are a smart and strong people. They also make good fighters have you heard of Michael Katsidis, Stan Longinidis or Michael Zambidis? They may have Pontian ancestry.

Kanaris, last names that end in 'idis' are from Pontos area. Not exclusively, -idis endings exist also in Epirotic Zagoria: Zwidis, Tselidis, etc... And in Cyprus : Klhridis, Christodoulidis, etc... The eponyms in Epiros need a big fat greek ... research!!! It is all those similarities that make us a nation. If we were cooler and more true, sincere, innocent, professional we would be No1.

They say the same about the 'opoulos' families there supposed to be found in the Peloponnese, but can be found in many other Greek areas. Maybe the Pontians may have moved to other Greek regions. There where Pontians in southern Russia until Stalin branded them as un wanted, there where around five hundred thousand to be precise.

Pyrros,
During the population exchange between Turkey and Greece, many pontians settled in Epirus. Those names are not native to the area.

Pyrros, During the population exchange between Turkey and Greece, many pontians settled in Epirus. Those names are not native to the area. Relax.... I am not talking about refugees. I am not talking about Anatoli, Bafra, Neokaisaria. I am talking about Zagoria. Dudes, i've lived in Epiros 18 years, in Crete 7 years. As a rule of thumb, whenever Pyrros says smth about the balkans, open wide eyes and ears and feel the knowledge. P.S. Please lets not be like CNN and BBC who would spread anti-russian propaganda, even in a program for underage kids.... pffffffff PS2 -opoulos are not exclusive in Peloponisos. + Theotokopoulos was not Pontian. What a freaking ignorance!

-I am opoulos and my roots are from Cephalonia. I think that there are more frequent occurences of specific name endings coming from certain places but there are always exceptions.

oh yeah, I almost forgot....you're a Greek man so you know everything! My bad! All those pontians just appeared in Epirus. It's not like it was ever documented....I don't know what I was thinking!
