Albanians and Greeks are the oldest Balkan nations, FYROMians just came and stole their lands centuries later. This is a horrible attitude and is a big reason why there is conflict in the Balkans.

It seems that Macedonians are closer to Romanians and Bulgarians which makes perfect sense. That sample is too small. Literally only four people were used to make a plot on the map and there's no explanation from which region of Macedonia that sample is from. What it does show though is that we all cluster pretty tightly together with lots of overlap from all sides.

and there is no dirt in mak? It's no different to the rest of the Balkans and eastern Europe in general. But it's part of the culture. I remember when I first immigrated to Australia as a kid and throwing trash anywhere I pleased at first but I quickly learned it's not acceptable here. So the people there will have to be taught in a similar fashion.

My reference to 'garbage' is the lay of the land. It is garbage!! People throw away throw stoves, cars etc in a forest next to the village. What's that all about? Of course, for a westerner seeing that it's a bit shocking. Hey looks like you were correct. I was reading some travel blogs and came across this: "" Litter is a real problem in ...... and nobody seems to care, as I was walking round the roads near the hostel a guy walked past me with a wheelbarrow full of rubble as he was building a house. He crossed the road with Beratthe barrow and proceeded to dump it all the riverbank. There was a whole mound of rubble in the area, such a shame. When I was at the castle I walked to one of the battlements and as I looked down there were thousands of plastic bottles that had just been dumped over the wall. ""Got that quote from here. Those uncivilized Balkanians. www.travelblog.org/Europe/Albania/West/Berat/blog-636711.html

I'm jealous of all the travelling you do Pyrros. Do you notice much of a difference between the people so far south in Macedonia and the northern Greeks just over the border?

Well, at least there's no dispute whether a statue of Tose Proeski belongs in Skopje or not.

More statues, on one of the new bridges this time. There definitely are too many statues. They over did it.

Oh and btw, Ohrid has a lot of Students from Skopje and other cities. It's possible that most of the people you saw were not from Ohrid originally.

Have you been to Skopje ulf? What did you think of the appearance of the Macedonians there?
I agree with you about people from Bitola. I have said this before many times but, the majority of Macedonian immigrants here in Australia are from Bitola, and me being from Skopje, they never guess me as one of their own. They always tell me they thought I was a Croat or a Bosnian, etc.

Of course, for a westerner seeing that it's a bit shocking. When they can throw bs money on buildings, statues (that have ZERO historical basis on the people there), but leave garbage and dead animals along side road.....that's fk'd up! Mayb they need to stop building all these unnecessary churches everywhere and focus on helping all the people. Again, you think Serbs are better? Or Albanians? Or Greeks, Romanians, Ukrainians, etc? It's the same shit everywhere man. This is eastern Europe. The entire region is the garbage pit of Europe according to western standards. Get your family members to visit any other country in the Balkans next time and tell me what they think. I think you suffer from "the grass is always greener on the other side" syndrome. Macedonia is not much worse that the rest of eastern Europe, and definitely not the worst overall. Believe me, I've been around a bit now, and there are places far less impressive.

...the country is a garbage pit of the balkans (other than Ohrid). don't y i come on this forum...that place disgusts me. I think that's a very unfair thing to say. I have traveled a lot lately and to be honest, Macedonia is no worse than most of eastern Europe. All criticisms towards Macedonia can also be applied to all the other Balkan countries. Hell, I've been to the mighty Czech Republic and if you strip away all the nice old buildings they have, it's not very different to Macedonia. You sound like a westerner who looks down on your own people, just because you have had privileges that they haven't. Would you yourself be any different if you grew up and stayed there? I doubt it.

I actually like this Zeljko version of Jovano Jovanke.
But the proper version is still the best.

Well, I'm surprised by your answers. I am actually Finnish. What makes me look Croatian/Bosnian/Slovenian? You don't look like you are from the Balkans, but people assumed you were since mostly people from the Balkans post here. And the northern parts have the lightest people so that's why everyone though you might be from there. I remember a Kurd who also posted his picture here and everyone guessed his origin assuming he was from somewhere in the Balkans.

I have always been wary of the message that's portrayed in size comparisons like this and how insignificant we are. We fight amongst each other, wage wars, and yet it means nothing.
But then, neither does anything good we do either. Art, beauty, love. Is that meaningless?

I eventually got them all across but I there was no strategy. I just tried all combinations until it worked. Good fun while it lasted.

Sculpture from Greece, Diadomenos Greek from Tinos island. These two do not look little alike btw.
