Athens reply to fYRoM FMGreece on Monday announced that the country's foreign minister again emphasised to her counterpart in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (fYRoM) that Athens considers the "name issue" as the paramount problem standing in the way of fully normalised bilateral relations. In her reply, dated March 24, Greek Foreign Dora Bakoyannis reminded that Athens has demonstrated a sincere volition over recent years to develop normal and productive bilateral relations. "Let me remind you in this respect that Greece has demonstrated, in practice, her willingness and preparedness to settle the issues that divide our two countries, as well as to build good neighbourly relations and to establish close cooperation in all fields with the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia," Bakoyannis states. Moreover, in broaching the eyebrow-raising proposal by fYRoM FM Antonio Milososki earlier this month for the establishment of a bilateral committee to "examine" historical issues, Bakoyannis was crystal clear:
"... I would like to emphasize that history is a science that establishes historical truth through scientific methods. It cannot and should not be subject to political expediency or any other political considerations. In this sense, history is not negotiable. The history of the ancient world has already been written and documented, over the centuries, through laborious scientific research by acclaimed international historians and archaeologists. It cannot be rewritten by a bilateral committee."In concluding her letter, Bakoyannis focuses directly on the resolution of the 19-year-old "name issue", noting that "...the catalyst for the improvement of the relations between our two countries is the long overdue definitive settlement of the 'name issue', in all its aspects. This would pave the way for the fulfilment of the European and the Euro-Atlantic perspective of your country, in accordance with the collective and unanimous decisions taken by the member-states of NATO and the EU," she said, citing the 2008 Bucharest summit joint communiqué and a European Council decision in June 2008. Additionally, she said improvement of bilateral relations and increasing bilateral cooperation between the two neighbouring states necessitates "...respect of the fundamental principles on which good neighbourliness is based, as provided by the Interim Agreement." Moreover, Bakoyannis pointed to the significant level of Greek private sector investments and business activity in the landlocked one-time Yugoslav republic while at the same time decrying what she called "numerous difficulties and obstacles (faced by Greek businesses and entrepreneurs there), including discriminatory and 'red tape' practices, acts of harassment and intimidation, even a boycott against their products..." Ancient Pella workshop discoveredA recently excavated ceramics workshop has yielded a plethora of information concerning the economic activities of Hellenistic-era Pella, one of the most significant sites in the ancient kingdom of Macedon, according to archaeologists in Thessaloniki on Monday, who spoke during a presentation of artifacts and findings. The workshop, unearthed by archaeologists of the culture ministry's 17th directorate of prehistoric and classical studies, was discovered north of the new entrance of the Pella archaeological site. It is believed to have been in operation between the final quarter of the 4th century BC and 200 BC. A plumbing system used to clean the potter's clay is among the most notable findings, while a furnace and storage areas were also uncovered. Movable artifacts include pottery casts, vessels, fragments of statuettes and silver and bronze coins. Basilmacedon, as long as you have people like Karta or Arxileas we will always be on the lookout. These people have still dreams of Megali ideas and $hit like that. Thats the reason we give them these reality checks. If you listen to these idiots they believe there's 400 000 Greeks in Albania. Their propaganda is all about fabricating numbers so that they could brainwash Greeks like you, who don't believe their $hit, into a useless fight. There's many people in Greece and Greek in the diaspora that buy $hit that comes out of their mouth. I did not think of Albanian nationalism saw me and Karta as a danger to their causes. I mean what is so harming to ones nation by promoting the "truth" Greek Epirotes culture and history inside their Ancient home lands Or even their plight they are in ! Truth sends you free, isn't that what you all want That’s the problem, you people ignore the fact your nation has made many bad decisions in the past. Look within rather then blame others for your mistakes. .

March 29, 2009
This years Greek-town parade celebrating Greece’s War of Independence will be better than ever. We will have dignitaries from all three major political parties of Greece, the provincial and federal levels of the legislature as well as local municipal councillors.
This year we also celebrate 100 years of The Greek Community in Canada and the positive contribution we have made.
Parade participants will be from the various societies of the different areas of Greece, from Peloponnese to Macedonia, plus societies from the Ionian and Aegean Islands. Special to this year Independence Day celebration the Canadian Military will parade an artillery squadron with the artillery piece reflective of the contribution that Canadians with Hellenic Heritage make in today’s missions in Afghanistan. This should be pleasing for young and old alike.

Greek fisherman nets 2,200-year-old bronze statueATHENS, Greece (AP) — A Greek fisherman must have been expecting a monster of a catch when he brought up his nets in the Aegean Sea last week. Instead, Greek authorities say his haul was a section of a 2,200-year-old bronze statue of a horseman. A Culture Ministry announcement said Monday the accidental find was made in waters between the eastern islands of Kos and Kalymnos. The fisherman handed over the corroded metal figure to authorities, who have started the cleaning process. Dating to the late 2nd century B.C., the statue represented a male rider wearing ornate breast armor over a short tunic and armed with a sheathed sword. The trunk of the horseman and his raised right arm have survived. Copyright © 2009 The Associated Press. Balkans is where civilization first started. (don't believe the nonsense about egypt and africa) Well we don’t know that for sure, yes some surviving known civilisation did come from the Balkans, what was around or else where before is unknown. If you ever do get to visit Egypt you just might change your mind ! They surpassed the Greeks in many ways imho, the Greeks are up there because of Alexanders conquests when he Hellenised the then known world, had he not we Greeks would be very little known today and we may have known almost nothing of the rest of the mentioned because our tales about them may have not survived.

He has probably confused this with the fact that certain words which appear in the Iliad have cognates in Albanian, and not in modern Greek.

Vassili,
Its cost effective...thats why. The rest are too expensive...
Now they are recommending us the F18 Superhornet. Its not a bad choice, personally I like the Rafales
F-18 Superhornet...looks kind of like an F-16, but stronger.. I agree with expatriot. Lads those F-18 Superhornets are awesome saw one last Sunday we had an air show here in Melbourne. The manoeuvres it can do and it's capabilities are outstanding, take my word for it as an eye witness with a smile from ear to ear. they are dangerous and very deadly.

Greece Halts Thessaloniki PrivatizationBruce Barnard | Mar 17, 2009 1:49PM GMT The Journal of Commerce Online - News Story Government to annul tender after top bidder withdraws London -- Greece is halting the privatization of container operations at Thessaloniki, the country's second largest box hub. The government is expected to announce shortly it has annulled a tender to operate and modernize the port's box terminal after the top bidder, Hong Kong's Hutchison Port Holdings, withdrew its offer in December. A joint venture between Hutchison and Greek pharmaceuticals company Alapis offered around $4 billion for a 30-year concession and pledged to invest $635 million to upgrade the port's outdated container facilities. The companies withdrew their bid just as they were about to draft contracts with the Thessaloniki Port Authority, a move attributed to the downturn in the global ocean container market. Dockers are opposed to privatization and have refused to work overtime and weekend shifts since January 2008, slashing Thessaloniki's box traffic last year to just below 239,000 TEUs from nearly 450,000 TEUs in 2007. The state-controlled Thessaloniki Port Authority is expected to undertake modernization on its own while the government decides whether to revive its privatization plan at a later date. The Greek parliament recently approved an agreement giving China's Cosco Pacific a 30-year concession to operate container terminals at Piraeus, the country's biggest box hub. Under the $1.1 billion deal due to start in November, Cosco will invest a further $300 million to expand the port's annual capacity to 3.7 million TEUs. Piraeus has also been hit by labor protests against the Cosco deal, resulting in traffic falling to 430,000 TEUs in 2008 from 1.37 million TEUs in 2007. www.joc.com/node/410115

Greece takes over new F-16Posted: March 19, 2009 at 22:34 PM EST (27:34 AM GMT) In a ceremony Thursday, Lockheed Martin officials formally handed over the first of 30 advanced F-16s to be produced for Greece's Hellenic Air Force. "We've made it our mission to provide the Hellenic Air Force with the world's most advanced 4th generation fighter," Ralph Heath, president of Fort Worth-based Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Co., said in presenting the aircraft to Greek military and government officials. Rev. Michael Stearns, priest at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church of Fort Worth, blessed the aircraft. Greece, which had previously bought three lots of F-16s totaling 140 planes since 1988, ordered the latest 30 in December 2005. The aircraft are more advanced than the F-16s now flown by the U.S., which plans to replace its aircraft in a few years with F-35s. Greece is also eyed as a likely F-35 customer. Greece leads Earth Hour raceGreece had yesterday overtaken countless other countries taking part in next Saturday’s Earth Hour, a worldwide initiative aimed at getting people to switch off their lights for one hour, with 18,000 individuals and businesses signing onto the energy-saving scheme, the highest rate of per capita participation to date. With 270 local authorities, 312 businesses, 151 schools and 57 nongovernment organizations having signed up already, Greece has overtaken Australia, where the scheme was devised. Australia is currently in third place, with Canada in second place, after Greece. On Saturday, March 28, between 8.30 and 9.30 p.m., the lights will go out on the Parthenon in Athens, Thessaloniki’s White Tower and several other prominent landmarks as thousands of citizens and businesses join in, flicking off light switches in their homes and stores. Greece’s participation in the initiative is being promoted further by the Istanbul-based Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomaios, known as the “green patriarch” due to his environmental activism. Vartholomaios has appealed to all citizens, regardless of their religious faith and ethnic origin, to join the scheme and embrace greener ways in general. According to conservation group WWF Hellas, lesser-known but equally devoted clerics are drumming up support for the cause in Greece. One example is Father Giorgos Nanos, a priest based on the island of Evia who has already devoted two sermons to Earth Hour as well as putting up posters promoting participation. “It is encouraging that a broad range of groups is being sensitized,” said Giorgos Vellidis of WWF Hellas, who is organizing Greece’s participation in Earth Hour. “In the two years that WWF’s climate change campaign has been running it has become clear that many people know the basics – the point is for them to put this knowledge into action,” Vellidis added. Those interested in boosting numbers for Greece’s participation in the initiative, which is being sponsored by Skai and Kathimerini should sign up at http:// www.earthhour.org/signup/gr:el. www.ekathimerini.com/4dcgi/_w_articles_politics_100010_19/03/2009_105642
