For most of its modern history, Germany has culturally idolised Greece. German philosophers such as Heidegger, who attributed to the Ancient Greek language an ability to convey meaning about the world in a way no other language could, consistently revered their classical culture. Greek democratic ideals provided the alternative for German nationalists of the 19thcentury to turn to when fighting long-standing monarchies. Wagner’s Ring Cycle, though drawing heavily on Nordic and Germanic tales, also mimicked the tetralogy, a form of Ancient Greek drama. Heine, a liberal supporter of anti-monarchical movements such as the July Revolution in France, was a little more sceptical of the greatness of Greece. Nevertheless, his satire of modernity, The Gods in Exile, made use of Greek gods to demonstrate the brutality and hypocrisy of, for example, monastic society (Bacchus becomes a Father Superior, and the beauty of Apollo’s singing gets him executed because it offends monks) and the uncompromising commercialism of 19th century Britain (England becomes the land of the dead). Satire is at its most powerful where it is iconoclastic, and by using the Greek (rather than the Roman or Nordic) gods as targets, Heine was affirming their cultural significance for his audience. Written in German, the essay confirmed the cultural role played by Ancient Greece in Germany at the same time as ridiculing it. Without wishing to compare any other period in the country’s history too closely with the Third Reich, the Nazi attitude to the Greeks bears mention here. After the invasion of Greece in 1941, the speed with which the Germans resumed archaeological investigation was remarkable. Large quantities of personnel and funding were thrown at the various digs which had been undertaken before the beginning of the invasion. What is most prescient, though, is the way Germans viewed their archaeological vocation: the most senior Nazi archaeologist wrote to Berlin that massive investment in excavations “would be so grand a gesture by the conqueror, who would show himself conscious of his cultural calling in Europe”. The Nazis, in their maniacal quest to establish German cultural, military (and everything-else) hegemony in Europe, had first to overcome their fawning reliance on Greek cultural reference by patronising it, in all senses of the word. If Germany could take ownership of Greek culture, it would go from being what Herder described as a “half-finished” people, to being totally complete and culturally self-sufficient. However, as we all know, the Third Reich did not complete its mission (for which every reasonable person can be thankful). Thus, after the war, Germany was both denied its opportunity to ‘come of age’ on its own terms, and left feeling justly guilty for its awful and enormous crimes before and during the war. And why does this matter? Because Germany, having established itself as a liberal democracy with an economy and a civil society of which it should be proud, now has another opportunity to come to terms with, and once-and-for-all throw off, any feelings of guilt or obligation to Greece, and vicariously to the rest of Europe. Not only that, but it has an opportunity to display, if it has not done so already, that it is as mature politically as it is economically (not forgetting that Germany as it is now is certainly less than 65, and arguably less than 25, years old); that it is willing to use its fiscal power to the benefit of Greece, without requiring that Greece subjugate itself to, or humiliate itself in-front of, German power. And that’s why, perhaps even against its better economic judgement, Germany is seeking and will continue to seek to keep Greece in the Eurozone. www.varsity.co.uk/comment/4973

I beg to differ, the Greeks of Montreal are not on welfare, most of them are well off,a lot of them employ the 'natives'...just like the Italians,Spaniards and Portuguese.
The Iraqis, afghans and pakis... don't mix well with Greece and Greek mentality... they should be going to France or Britain...
How's Golden Dawns stance on Albanians living in Greece?
How's Golden Dawns stance on Serbs,Russians and Polish immigrants living in Greece?
Do they just target visible minorities?

She married twice, first Dimitrios Yiannouzas and later the wealthy shipowner and captain Dimitrios Bouboulis, taking his surname. Bouboulis was killed in battle against Algerian pirates in 1811. So Boubou is albanian? Maybe Honey Boo boo is albanian too...
