Buerger’s disease is a disease which leads to acute inflammation and thrombosis of arteries and veins affecting hands and feet. This disease is also known as thromboangiitis obliterans. The people who are most susceptible to this disease are the ones who smoke heavily. This disease generally occurs in smokers between the ages 20-40 years old. But recently people over the age of 40 are also seen with this disease.
The initial symptom of this disease is the pain in hands and feet due to insufficient flow of blood during exercise. This condition is called claudication. Pain may also be experienced in the limbs during rest. The pain generally begins at the extremities and radiates to other parts of the limb. Another symptom of this disease is a condition in which the tips of the limbs turn white on exposure to cold called Raynaud’s phenomenon. Numbness or tingling in the limbs, skin ulcerations, extreme pain and gangrene of fingers and toes are also common in this disease. This disease does not involve other organs like kidneys, lungs and brain. It is always confined to the extremities of the limbs.
The major reason for the development of this disease is smoking. Most of the patients of this disease are heavy smokers. This disease is known to be triggered by some constituent of tobacco. The best method to treat this disease is by stopping smoking. Patients who continue to smoke face serious situations like amputation of the fingers and toes. Smoking should be stopped immediately using Stop smoking drugs or natural methods because once the smoker gets this disease anti inflammatory agents like steroids do not prove effective. The only way to fight the disease is by avoiding all tobacco products.
