Ethnic barriers smaller than expected 9 November 2007 | 11:57 | Source: Beta NOVI SAD -- Research shows that inter-ethnic relations among young people in Vojvodina are better than are portrayed in the media.
Vojvodina Executive Council Vice-President Tamaš Korhec said yesterday that the situation was not that bad, based on the results of research carried out in primary and secondary schools by the Provincial Secretariat for National Minorities and the Teachers’ Bureau of Vojvodina.
"Nationalist hatred and intolerance are not as prominent among young people as some news and certain incidents would have us believe,” Korhec said.
He said that research showed that prejudice existed among young people as a result of not knowing one another well enough.
“Not many people know much about each another, especially those who are not of the same nationality and don’t share the same language, culture or history,” Korhec said.
He said that the goal of the Vojvodina assembly was to work on combating prejudice, and creating an atmosphere where differences in people’s culture would be considered one of the province’s positive features.
The research was part of a project entitled “Establishing Multi-Culturalism and Tolerance in Vojvodina”.
A total of 4,311 students were polled from 60 secondary and 59 primary schools in the province.
