Slovenia mulls mosque construction 9 January 2009 Slovenian Prime Minister Borut Pahor supports the idea of building a mosque in Slovenia, but insists that its appearance should not engender intolerance.
In talks with Slovenian mufti Nedzad Grabus, Pahor said on Thursday that he backed the construction of the first mosques in Slovenia and a religious center for Muslims, but added that their appearance must not be allowed to incur the intolerance of those who oppose the idea.
Pahor said that he was convinced that the architects commissioned to build the mosques would be wary of not upsetting those who are against the building plans.
He said that building mosques would consolidate the conditions for a modern and open society in Slovenia.
Muslims in Slovenia have been clamoring for the construction of a mosque in the country for over 30 years. Religious services for Muslims in Slovenia are usually performed in rented-out sports centers.
The first mosque is expected to be built in Ljubljana, near the center of the city, even though opponents of the construction say that a mosque, with its minarets, would undermine the city’s cultural identity.
Certain public figures in Slovenia have even gone so far as to say that mosques could serve as a new gathering point for would-be terrorists.

There is no need for a minaret, its pointless anyway since it wont be used and the concept of a minaret is outdated, it used to once be used to sing out a prayer in a society where people could not keep perfect time.
The mosque should be built in the style which the surrounding area is in, anything else is just chauvinism. Hell it could even be in the style of a church, just accommodating Islamic prayer needs.

^^ i understand your point of view, but i think their reasoning is more of a scapegoat thing, in order to not sound outright anti-muslim. ethnic slovenes dont want any mosque built on slovenian territory, period!
croatia on the other hand, has permanent islamic prayer centres all over croatia, with the government giving these buildings and properties to the islamic community of croatia. the osijek local government has given the approval to build a new mosque in osijek, to be built in ottoman architecture. the approval was given i think in 2004, and construction was to start in 2006, but due to lack of fundings, the construction has been delayed. croatia already has 2 mosques. one is in zagreb, and the other in gunja

Still, thats their decision and since its their nation, those who are not of it have to respect it... thats my firm belief.
