Hi, i just met a shumadian fellow at the Serb kinder school, and he told me talking about the proportion of women/men in banja luka, that those women are huge!
Having been my self in sarajevo, brcko, banja luka, other places in RS, novi sad, vrnjacka banja, i asked him if there is a difference in height between the various places where serbs/yugoslavs live. ( i noticed bigger people in big places/cities, small ppl in small places, regardless of country/province) He told me that the average in Serbia it was for the whole male population (elderly included) : 174 cm, while for Bosnia 175, Hercegovina 176 and Crna Gora 177 cm
Is this measured or verified? Hvala u naprijed!

Bosanci... but that's only because most of the Srbijanci I know were (on average) smaller than the Bosanci I know.

I suppose only statistics from the ministry of education (high schools) or ministry of health could answer such questions.

I am from Hercegovina and I am not tall at all, neither is my father and his brother but many members of his family are well over 190cm and taller. I am 178 and my father is about 173. I did have 3-4 neighbors who were close or little over 2m but also many that are about 170 or so. I do remember a crnogorac coming to our pijaca on weekends to sell cheese and some other stuff and the guy was absolutely huge. He was towering over the tallest people I knew and he wasn't just tall but he was built like a truck.

According to my impression, amongst all yugoslavs i saw, the tallest were in Sarajevo, the next in Novi Sad, and then Banja Luka. I've never been to Beograd, while from what i witness in Halkidiki, where exclusively Srbianci go (and few FYROmakedonci) i thought Serbs from Serbia were equal or taller than Bosnian Muslims, while Bosnian Serbs a little shorter than muslims or Srbianci.
Anyways, and from whateva say, i think that the striking part about the Yugoslav's height is not the absolute average numbers but the standard deviation from the mean height. Without having any numbers i think yugoslavia is a place where there is a big probability of finding small, average and huge people all in the same place and time. amazing!

Thats weird Novi, in Greece we always heard about Yugoslavs as being the tallest nation on earth. First time i stepped in Brcko, i asked my wife, alright where are the tall ppl? All guys seemed like at my height 176 cm, whereas some were shorter than 170cm And suddenly some time later afternoon, the place was jammed with 2m tall guys, the same in Novi Sad, dont know, weird staff!

There's just as much variation in height as there is in other appearance but if you don't count Crno Gorci as Serbs then Serbs are still the tallest after them. Serbs dominate tall sports like basketball & volleyball. Serbs have without question dominated the Jadranska basketball League since participating. Actually no other Balkan country even comes close to Serbias basketball achievements. Especially when you look at juniors. Croats are better at small sports like soccer & handball. I remember reading that Serbia had by far the tallest football team at the last World Cup, as well as the tallest player (Zigic) at once. There were also some articles about how the Serbian soccer team was super tall at the last Olympics. I remember watching them play & it looked as though the other teams were little children. Rajkovic is particularly massive. I've travelled everywhere except for Croatia in the Balkans & I really can't pinpoint too much of a specific height. In Montenegro they are definitely the tallest. I always thought Bosanci were a little bit shorter but I was also blown away at some giant people I saw in Banja Luka. I'm only 180cm

Actually, you almost have to be tall to play handball. I think the smallest guy on the team is 183 cm. At Euro 2004 we had the tallest team while the Czechs were second.

One good statistic is the growth graph of children, separately for boys & girls, printed in the health booklet of any newborn child. I think in Greece the human height follows a Normal Distribution (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normal_distribution), with a median (almost equal to average), value for 18 years old men @ 1.76m, so that means that half are shorter than 1.76 and the other half taller than 1.76.
It would be interesting to see if the median and average figures for Yugoslavia, because if they dont match then they simply dont comply with the Normal Distribution.
