Vinca used to be the most progressive in Europe Author: D. V. | 05.05.2008 - 06:00 The Vinca culture that flourished in the Balkans about 6,000 years B.C. was technologically the most progressive in Europe. It mastered processing of metals at the same time as the cultures of the Middle East. This is the conclusion made by the leading archeologists of the Great Britain, Germany and Serbia that was announced at the biggest world congress of archeologists in Vancouver.
Their work presents proofs that in the Eastern Serbia at the time of Neolith there was a copper smelting and foundering workshop. This is the earliest documented finding of copper processing in the whole world, B92 reported. Miljana Radivojevic who led the research during her master studies in archeology in London says that Vinca was a developed settlement of metallurgy and a leader in the new technologies in the Balkans and Europe. The new findings put end to so far claims that Vinca belongs to a culture of the Stone Age and that the Middle East cultures had decisive influence on the development of the civilization in Europe. ‘The metallurgy we had in the Balkans took place at the same time when in the Middle East, what means that the Vinca culture was the most progressive society in Europe at that time’, Radivojevic says. Her mentor, Professor Tilo Reren points out that now the archeologists can establish the appearance of the first civilization in Europe and that this is a very important research not only for Serbia, but for Europe, as well.
