He may be approaching his 60th birthday but Radomir Antić is cutting a youthful figure as he makes a long-awaited return to coaching, with his boundless energy and enthusiasm directed at leading Serbia through qualifying and to the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Surprise leaders Out of work since leaving RC Celta de Vigo four years ago, Antić says that having accepted his first appointment as a national-team coach he already feels younger, walking with a spring in his step. He may need that vigour. Serbia started their Group 7 campaign with a victory over the Faroe Islands before losing 2-1 in France, and next up are surprise section leaders Lithuania in Belgrade on Saturday. "Judging simply by results, you have to say that Lithuania's [3-0] win in Romania was a surprise for many," said Antić. "But for all of us who understand football and who have analysed how it happened, it is easy to see that both this victory and the 2-0 win over Austria [that followed] were totally merited.
Important game "Lithuania will come to Belgrade full of confidence and we are a little on the back foot," he continued. "They are a really good side with two fine wins under their belt and a tendency to score goals from dead-ball situations. They are a team on the rise, in terms of confidence and profile, so this is the most important game for us in terms of World Cup qualification."
Positive mindset Antić is an ebullient, confident man whose pledge has always been to play attacking football and win with style wherever possible. That ethos was displayed as he clocked up the rare achievement of having successfully coached Real Madrid CF, Club Atlético de Madrid and FC Barcelona, and he found it hard to accept that his credentials were not going to be attractive to employers. "I always attempt to project my knowledge and experience on to the people I work with, and I always seek to draw positives from those around me," he explained. "Serbia is a proud nation and we don't want to be inferior to anyone so we are always searching for a way of playing which suits that mentality. As a football enthusiast I want to play the type of football which represents the people and the ambition of our country."
Important ally While one of Serbia's key players, striker Nikola Žigić, continues to get very little first-team football at Valencia CF, Antić can at least look to one of his country's greatest defenders to provide team leadership: Nemanja Vidić. "Nemanja's experience and evolution as a player and as a man are vital to us," Antić says. "He's gone from Serbia to Russia and from Russia to England and he's managed to improve himself with each move. I'd call him a great player who brings confidence to my team with his behaviour, attitude and style of play." They are three things Antić needs little introduction to.
Next game against Lithuania is a must win. If the Orlovi are unable to pull off a win here then we don't deserve a spot in South Africa, simple as that.
Ignoring all the backstage politics within FSS we have a quality crop of young players capable enough to fill in most positions on the pitch. Still lacking a naturally gifted striker upfront but a more concerning problem is a lot of our starting XI players arent getting regular game time at club level (a couple don't even make the bench). We will see how it affects them in the upcomming games.
Anyways, IDEMO DALJE...
List of players available for the games against LITH and AUT
Golmani: Vladimir Stojković (Sporting Lisabon), Vladimir Dišljenković (Metalurg) i Bojan Isailović (Čukarički).
Odbrambeni igrači: Branislav Ivanović (Čelsi), Nemanja Vidić (Mančester Junajted), Ivica Dragutinović (Sevilja), Mladen Krstajić (Šalke), Ivan Obradović (Partizan), Igor Đurić (Vojvodina), Antonio Rukavina (Borusija Dortmund).
Krasic kills it from in close for 2:0... we literally had 5 chances within a one minute span before that for a goal... such domination of the group leaders Lithuanians, I am really proud of our boys! They came to play!
Father Wants Subotic To Play For Serbia Zeljko Subotic has stated he would get much satisfaction from seeing his highly-touted son Neven play for Serbia.
The cloud surrounding the future of defender Neven Subotic continues to grow as he comes close to deciding his international future. Eligible to play for five teams, the US, Germany, Croatia, Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina, Subotic hasn’t made a clear indication of where he wants to play up to this point.
His father however, has made it clear what shirt he wants his 19-year-old son to wear at the international level.
"My heart tells me that Neven should decide on Serbia,” said Zeljko Subotic of where his son should play. “For me, I would get much satisfaction out of seeing him playing in a Serbian jersey.”
Being that Subotic lived in the states through his teen years, he was eligible to play for the US national team, and he has done so, but only at the youth level. Being that he wasn’t capped by the US Men’s team, he is still allowed to choose where he wants to play as an adult.
The highly-touted teenager isn’t the first player the US Men’s National Team has had on the fence about what nation he wants to play for. Clifton, New Jersey native Giuseppe Rossi opted to play for the Italian team given his parents were both Italian natives. Similar to Rossi, Edgar Castillo, formally of Las Cruces, New Mexico, decided playing for the Mexican national team was the way to go, and the US lost out on another exciting young talent.
It remains to be seen whether the US will get burned again by players choosing to play for another nation as it’s clear that Rossi and Castillo would have been valuable pieces in the puzzle for the national team as it stands now.
Recently, they have won a player over, 20-year-old Jose Torres, who plays his club football in Mexico and could have played for El Tri, but decided the USMNT was the best option.
Being that he is only 19, Subotic still has roughly two years to decide on what team he’ll represent, being that the rules state he must choose before his 21st birthday, and with his father openly promoting Serbia it will be interesting to see which country he choose and if the US will miss out again.
