The modern-day restoration of a beacon of knowledge in the ancient world, the Library of Alexandria, will soon host a new program offering post-graduate and doctoral courses in Hellenistic studies.
The Center of Hellenistic Studies will open in the next academic year, with funding by the Alexandros S. Onassis Foundation, the Vardinoyannis Foundation and the Alexandria University, under the auspices of Egyptian first lady Suzanne Mubarak, all part of the Alexandria Library partnership.
Deputy Foreign Minister Theodoros Kassimis, Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa Theodoros II, the president of Onassis Foundation Antonis Papadimitriou and UN Goodwill Amb. Marianna Vardinoyannis attended the center's inauguration on Friday.

I think that if Greece continues to expand hers economy in the Eastern Mediterranean, Greek languages can be again the "lingua franca" of this area, as it was for a couple of thousands(ca 323-1453)...

Usually "lingua franca" becomes a language that belongs to a nation that is highly developed economically and Greece is not even close to that...I wish it was, but unfortunately it isn't...

Greece is developed as much if not more than the other European countries... What was the last time you lived more than 6 months there?
In fact Greece is one of the few that hasn't suffered as much, under this global economic gloom.
My concern is that Greece will lose out in language and the way it is written... many now even in schools are teaching pupils to write Greek with Latin letters. Then again Greek with Latin letters can take over like wildfire.

Well, I don't think that you watch any Greek TV Kanaris. I don't either, but someone who watches told me that Greece has been hit really hard by the ongoing global recession. I was told that business don't have money to pay their employees for six months now, and the bread lines are becoming longer by day...I hope I'm misinformed, but I'm afraid that this is the truth...

Well, that's a nice way to see it Kastor, but if my memory serves me well, some undeveloped Asian countries were hit hard by the food crisis when the oil price went up several months ago...does it mean that these countries are highly developed too and we don't know it?
Being hit in a global economy is normal, but being hit hard means that the economy of that country is totally depended on the others, and shows that the financial industry of that country is too weak to survive. You might argue that this is happening in USA and Germany too, but USA and Germany have the ability (and by ability I mean the money and the industry) to turn the tables around, but countries with fragile and dependable economy like Greece do not have that luxury...

A bread line,eh???Gee,i havent noticed, thank you albquietman...it was about time,i need to loose a couple of kiloz... ;D By bread line I meant people that are broke, have no money and go to the charities that give them free food. I don't know why you guys are so surprised, because you can see these in USA too. Leandros, I don't think that you go out too often, so no wonder you haven't seen them and can't loose any kilos... Anyway, I've got to go to eat dinner now, since we're talking about bread...

Kanaris, before you came in this forum you didn't even know that Albania existed, and now you seem to think that you have a deep knowledge of Albania and its history...well, that's your illusion, but you can keep it if it can make you to feel better. Anyway, I'm not denying that Albania had tough times, like every country at some point, but so far Albania has not registered any death because of famine like Greece had in the winter of 1941-1942 when 300.000 people died because they had nothing to eat. I guess that was the reason that your parents decided to enter between the legs of Canada...
