VIDEOwww.ethnos.gr/article.asp?catid=11378&subid=2&tag=8777&pubid=1746552Newspaper revealed a classified document of state Department that proves a secret co operation between US and Skopjia on the name issue. Athens reacts strongly. According to the article the proposal submitted by the UN special negotiator Mathew Nimetz had been suggested by the US Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was recorded in the letter sent by the US ambassador in Skopje last June. The letter was received by State Department, the Security Council and the US General Headquarters. The US diplomat provocatively notes that the issue of the language and nationality will be handled without the participation of Greece using internal UN documents. Athens reacted strongly. The Greek representative of foreign affairs ministry Mr. Giorgos Koumoutsakos, in his statements said that Greece has a clear stance. First of all, the negotiations will take place only within the framework of the UN and secondly the Greek position proposes a compound name geographically oriented.

Greek-American relations should be improved after that scandal. the US might have lost an old ally, a traditionally pro-American European country who, in the future, can help in the stability in the Balkans and the Middle East....

The US has jeopardized it's relations with Spain too...
Only weak countries need to be an ally of the US. Countries that can't stand up on their own two feet...

20 October 2008 Skopje _ Macedonia has rebuffed allegations by Greek media that it is secretly devising a plan with the United States on the ongoing “name” dispute behind Greece's back. The Macedonian government issued a statement in which it “strongly and categorically denied” such claims after the Greek daily Ethnos published an article called “The Final Ideas are Rice’s” claiming that the latest United Nations-sponsored set of ideas for solving the dispute were actually secretly devised by the US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in July in order to please Skopje. The daily revealed an alleged document claiming to contain correspondence in July between the US embassy in Skopje and the State Department in which the fresh proposal was allegedly being sketched to suit Skopje. Ethnos claimed that that the document contained plans to override Athens at the UN in order to pass a resolution for the recognition of Macedonia’s language and identity. So far the US embassy in Skopje has not commented on the allegations. This comes at crucial time in the UN negotiations. Both countries are expected to give their replies to the latest set of ideas during this week. Read more: www.balkaninsight.com/en/main/news/14030/According to the media in both countries, the UN mediator in the dispute, Matthew Nimetz proposed the name Republic of Northern Macedonia for Skopje’s wider international use and several possible solutions for the so-called issue of Macedonian identity. Meanwhile Athens on Monday claimed that it had persuaded the Republic of Congo as well as Mexico to start referring to Macedonia under the provisional term, “Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, FYROM” which was adopted by the UN in 1993 under Greek pressure pending a resolution to the dispute. Skopje previously rebuffed allegations saying that it is waiting for an official Mexican position. Since 1993, around 120 countries have recognised Macedonia’s constitutional name. Among them are the US, Russia and China. In April, Athens blocked Skopje’s bid to join NATO and is now threatening to do the same at the European Union if Macedonia refuses to change its name. Greece argues that Macedonia’s name implies Skopje’s territorial claims over its own northern province of the same name.

The newspaper printed extracts from the document suggesting that Greece should be bypassed on the the issue of a supposed Macedonian identity and language. “The language and nationality would be called ‘Macedonian’ but this could be handled tacitly perhaps as an annex... or in some other internal UN document not subject to Greek review/approval,” the text reads.
The document was reportedly sent from the US Embassy in Skopje to the US State Department in July, well before Nimetz made his proposal to envoys from Athens and Skopje earlier this month. Nimetz proposed that the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) be renamed the “Republic of Northern Macedonia.” According to sources, he also raised the issue of a supposed Macedonian language and identity, provoking the anger of Greece, which says it is groundless and has no place in the name talks.
Neither side has provided any official response to the proposal yet, with both Athens and Skopje insisting that it should be subject to “several changes.”
Reacting to the report, Koumoutsakos did not directly comment on any alleged cooperation between the USA and FYROM on the Macedonia name issue but reiterated Greece’s stance “which remains clear – a composite name with a geographical determination.”
