We are first mentioned in the 1st century BC by Pliny; he calls us Olbonenses. We are also mentioned by Ptolemy of Alexandria in his work Geographia; he calls us Albanoi. In his drafted map, he situates the city of Albanopolis northeast of Dyrrachium (modern Durrës).
Of interest is also the fact that our ethnonym came in two versions; as Alban and Arban. The -alb version was adopted by the West and is the one currenty in use internationally. However, we Albanians used the -arb version (Arbën, Arbënesh, Arbëror), which is also the medival version used by Slavs (Arbanasi, Raban) & Greeks/Byzantines (Arb/vanites, Arvanon). This is of interest because in the 2nd century BC, Polybius, in his work "The History of The World", mentions the place-name of Arbon. He situates it in present day Central Albania. He calls the people there Arbanios or Arbanitai; the latter being very reminiscent of the medieval Greek term/s for the Albanians.
The autochtonous position of the Albanians is contested only by nationalist-driven pseudohistorians who refuse to see the obvious facts presented before them!

Olbonenses...
Albanoi...
do we know anything more about these anchestors of yours -like you want to believe- that connects your people to them? What about their language???
also, what about this silly obsession of modern albanians about the pelasgians???they are so eager to prove that they are the most ancient nation in the balkans, that they dare to say that even atlantis-if such a place ever existed-was also albanian...

It's such a complex field of science that I'd feel would take to long to explain to you ... not to mention that you wouldn't listen and that the whole effort would go unappreciated. And as for the Pelasgian thesis; again, do not generalize. I personally am not a believer of that theory, since it is just as plausible as the whole "out of" Caucasus theory.

I would have to say yes. The Albanians are new to the Balkans. They have no connection to the ancient Illyrians via language, culture.. eg.... Albanians compare to modern greeks are pretty authoctuns (based Culturally, Ethnography, Archeology, Folk Costumes, Traditions, Language, Antropology ect)....imagine 70% of modern greeks have roots from Asia Minor that camed after 1921....this is not suprise why greek nation never exitet before XIX Century ^ They are first mentioned in 1081!. yes funny in your poor brain is, read history nomad.

Atlantis is right. Want to discuss about a theory, discussion theme etc open ONE topic on the matter. Here we are discussing everywhere, everything. And when greek guys cant stand the discussion they open another topic. And everybody is farting around the topics. What we have here now? a statement, a poll, and a lot of big fat greek farts.

I think the Albanians are native to the Balkans.
At least most of the scientists see them as ancestors of the ancient Illyrians, still it doesnt mean that only the Albanians are the descendants of this ancient people.

The better question is, how the hell you you know what kind of language was Illyrian since there was none recorded?

Guys I insist that Albanians come from South America. Check all the names in encarta.msn.com/encnet/features/mapcenter/map.aspxAlban 60 results and most of them are located in the Americas Albanopolis 3 cities that have an astonishingly similar name are located in Brazil it cannot be a coincidence
