Im not avoiding anything, I wish Albania persecuted the Greek minority, but thats not a reality. The issue Karta is describing, about the television, was a just thing Albania did since a lot of the Greek channels were coming in illegally. The Greek channels were part of a larger sweep.
Its Greeks that spin this as if these is something "wrong" going on.
And sorry, but there never was any real "violence" against the Greek minority, especially by a govt that formed just 1 year ago(from the time of that article).

Toskali711 Big Liar... On the way to conquest the Northern Epirus lands… Albanian police special forces against the rights of propriety owners of Kakomea, Himara Region. "Albania must stopped on the way to EU and NATO if the lands are not come back to the legitimate owners of Himara`s people" The Coast Ionian owners and Himara`s Community against the Republican Politic Party and the Albanian government - writs the newspaper “Koha Jone” on January 21. The Himara`s Community has strongly opposed the proposal of the head of Parliamentary Republican party Group Arian Madhi, who lately asked the Government to identify and make available the physical compensation those coastal lands which “are nobody`s and are not I use”. The Himara`s Community which presents the legitimate owners of the elite tourist area of Ionian Coast line known as the beautiful are Vlora Saranda who lives the oldest Greek Community very rich with Byzantine and monasteries church, addressed a public letter to Madhi warning him of abusing with the duty and the confidence of people. ‘We sent this public letter to you to wanr you of abusing with the duty and with the confidence of people who have voted for you” says over alls the letter. Through this letter the Association underscored that “By embracing this ant owner political line constantly you, de facto are preventing the normal process of Albanian`s membership to NATO and EU and we must said: “NO ALBANIA TO NATO AND EU ORGANISATION SINCE THE PROPRIETY DOES NOT GO TO OWNERS” One month ago during the visit of Albanian President Bamir Topi in Athens the Greek counter part Karolos Papulias asked Topi if the “Albanian government is making efforts about the propriety rights of Greeks in Albania as the positive way to joint Albania to Euro Atlantic organizations Topi expressed his responsibility to make pressing to Albanian plitic parties to resolve soon as possible the propriety issue of greeks who live in Albania.. But according to information a list of project laws made by Albanian government headed by Sali Berisha, are waiting to approve by parliament under the “legalization Process” laws which favorites the Albanians to conquest proprieties of Greeks who lives in in Northern Epirus particularly to the Ionian Coast Line, known as the Himara region. Not according to Tom Lantos First of all, you're falsely leading people on, in that link, Tom Lantos is not quoted with those words...but the author of this site...Tom Lantos only investigated these claims and took a trip to Albania. Funny, he neither wrote, nor discussed anything about the greek minority in Albania, to this day too. Also, you are posting an old story...this story is older than my mother... The Panepirotic Federation of America will hold its 35th Annual Convention in Worcester, Massachusetts .The renowned Greek-American author Mr. Nicholas Gage, of Epirotic extraction, in an interview with the National Herald said that among the purposes of the upcoming convention is “the strengthening of and the Internalization of the Panepirotic Organization because now we are not organized only in the United States but last year we formed an International group Worldwide. The goals are two actually, to help promote the development of Epirus and basic rights for the Greek Community in Northern Epirus.” Mr. Gage said “we are coming back to Worcester because this is where the Organization was founded 65 years ago and we are experiencing a revival of the Organization, for example the master of ceremonies at the Convention will be two young women, one of them is my daughter and the other one a Worcester television reporter.” Asked what the situation is like for the Northern-Epirotans in Albania today, Mr. Gage said that “in large part to the work we have done the fear that existed has dissipated because Albanian leaders have recognized that if they abuse the Greek Minority it is going to have very adverse International consequences. They are very careful now how they treat the Greek Minority. They have leaders of the Greek Minority serving in the governments in the last several years. We have one member who was the minister of labor, Kostas Bargas; we had a prefect, we had a deputy minister and we were very successful in making sure the U.S. policy to Albania is contingent of how the Greek Minority is treated. Schools have been built, a school was open in Himara last year that did not exist for seventy years.” One of the things the Federation has asked is for the Albanian government to reveal the number of Greeks in the region. “The Albanians give a low estimate and the Greek Minority Leaders give a higher estimate, we do not know,” Mr. Gage said. “The fact that Albanian leaders are afraid to hold a census indicates that the numbers are strong. I would probably say the real number is between 250,000 to 300,000, which is a very good number. If you add the vlachs who identify themselves as Greeks, say they are Greek and many of them speak Greek then the number may be more than double.” When asked about the imminent visit of President George Bush The Clinton and Bush administrations have made it clear to the Albanian government that they are very carefully monitoring how they treat the Greek minority. The reason the U.S. government has been sensitive to the treatment of minorities is because the Panepirotic Federation has made them sensitive. It has really done an outstanding job lobbying for the Greek minority in Washington.” Gage also said “the presence of Michael Dukakis as the keynote speaker of the convention is another reflection of the importance of the Panepirotic Federation. We also have been very successful in getting a lot of stories in the press about the Greek Minority in such publications as the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Boston Globe and the Washington Times. In fact, there have been more articles about the Greek minority in Albania in major newspapers than any other Greek issue the last ten years.” Asked if Greeks are allowed to worship in the Greek language or if Archbishop Anastasios imposes the use of Albanian in Greek speaking communities, he said, “what they do is what we are doing here. In Greek speaking communities the language used is Greek, like in Agioi Saranta for example. Where the community is Orthodox Christians and they do not speak Greek, then the language used is Albanian and Greek He went on to say “there are some people who do not know the difficulties and the miraculous achievements of Anastasios in rebuilding the Church there under very difficult circumstances. They make pronouncements from far away and if you say to them how many Northern Epirotan Greeks want to become priests, there were not many, but they want the Greek language.” When asked how he feels as an Epirotan, Mr. Gage said, “This is a way I identify myself as a human being. I am an American citizen, an ethnic Greek and a regional Epirote. We have very strong cultural traditions, we have a long history and we have done tremendously in America.” In the Balkan Wars (1912-1913), between the present Balkan countries and the Ottoman Empire, the Ottomans lost a large part of their Balkan territory. Epirus became part of Greece. The geopolitics of the day, more specifically Italian imperial ambitions, forced a large part of Northern Epirus to be incorporated into the newly formed nation of Albania. The Northern Epirotans, immediately revolted and in May 1914, they became recognized as an autonomous territory by the International Control Comssion, Albania and the European powers of the day. Following World War I, the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, the disastrous defeat of the Greek Armed Forces in Asia Minor (1922) and the ongoing Bolshevik Revolution, Epirotans lost their autonomy. Following the communist seizure of Albania after World War II, Northern Epirotans were subjected to systematic ethnic cleansing by Albanians for almost 45 years. They were uprooted from their homes by the thousands and scattered to northern regions of the country where they were completely cut off from their fellow Greeks. Thousands more were executed and tens of thousands were sentenced to long prison terms for expressing any loyalty to their Greek traditions. They were forced to change their names, renounce their ethnic identity and deny their religious beliefs. On July 19, 1942 in Worcester Massachusetts, the Panepirotic Federation of America was founded for the purpose of coordinating the activities of the Epirotic Societies that had come into existence in the United States since 1915. Our main aim is the protection of human rights and identity of what is now the recognized Greek minority of Albania.

Greek Minority in Albania
1991-02-11
Geography
The greater part of the Greek minority in Albania lives in a 5,000 km² area of southern Albania close to the Greek Border. The Region is called Northern Epiros by the Greeks, referring to the historical state of Epiros.
People
Population:
The Greek population in Albania is currently estimated to be around two percent of the total Albanian population, which amounts to around 70.000 persons.
Languages: Greek.
Brief History:
The 3rd century Northern Epiros by the Greeks was ruled by the Ottoman empire for almost 500 years.
1912 The Great Powers´ Ambassadorial Conference in London Declared Albania an autonomous state.
1913 Epiros was divided between Albania and Greek. A new boundary between two countries was drawn by the International Commission for Definition of Boundaries. Northern Epiros came under Albanian control.
1917 According the Protocol of Corfu, Northern Epiros region would have its own administration system and government representation.
1921 The Albanian Declaration on the Protection of Minorities was proclaimed. The minority group assurances contained in the Declaration were not respected.
1946 The Paris Conference of Allies gave Greek participants false hopes that Northern Epiros would be reunited with Greece. 1955 Despite of Greece objecting to the admission of Albania to the UN until the border question was settled, Albania was admitted into the UN.
1994 Talks began between Albania and Greece on the status of the Greek Minority in Albania and the Albanians in Greece but without results. 1995 Greece and Albania agreed to develop a friendship treaty and a joint committee to regulate seasonal work for Albanians in Greece was established. 1996 Three Greek language schools were opening.
Historical background:
Most of the Greek Minority in Albania live in southern Albania, a region called Northern Epiros by most Greeks, referring to the historical state of Epiros which was divided between Albania and Greece in 1913. They speak Greek and the principal religion is Greek Orthodox.
In 1913, Northern Epiros came under Albanian control. The Greeks have lived in that region since the third century B.C.. The region was a part of the Ottoman Empire for almost 500 years until the beginning of the 20th century. The decline of the Ottoman Empire created drastic changes in the Balkan area.
In December 1912, the Great Powers' Ambassadorial Conference in London declared Albania an autonomous state. A year later, the Florence Agreement divided Epiros, conceding the northern part to Albania. A new boundary between Greece and Albania was drawn by the International Commission for Definition of Boundaries.
The signing of the Protocol of Corfu in 1914 insured that the Northern Epiros region would have its own administration and government. This protocol also recognized the rights of the Greek Minority and provided self-government under nominal Albanian sovereignty.
In 1920, Albania was admitted to the League of Nations under the condition that its government would give formal assurances that the rights of ethnic and religious minorities would be fully respected. This was undertaken in the form of the Albanian Declaration on the Protection of Minorities, proclaimed on October 2, 1921.
These assurances, however, were not respected and by 1934, all non-state schools had been closed. Greece brought the issue to the Council of the League of Nations, which referred it to the Permanent Court of International Justice and in 1935, this court decided that Albania had to restore the right of its minorities to establish their own schools.
Gross violations of human rights were committed against all citizens of Albania under the communist dictator, Enver Hoxha, who wielded total power from 1941 until his death in 1985. His Prime Minister, Ramiz Alia, took over in 1985 until the communist regime collapsed in 1991. The Greek minority suffered from religious persecution and the denial of its national and cultural identity.
Current situation:
The Greek Minority in Albania continues to suffer. The Albanian government has cleaned ethnic Greeks from appointed positions of power. The violence is a part of a government plan to force ethnic Greek to abandon their homes in Albania and move south to Greece. A visit to Albania by US Congressman Tom Lantos, with Mr. Menelaos Tzelios led to Congressional action to put pressure on Albanian authorities.
Organizations
The Greek Minority in Albania is represented in the UNPO by the Democratic Union of the Greek Ethnic Minority in Albania (OMONIA). Its goal is to be recognised as a minority, to be granted unrestricted rights of travel to their motherland and the rights to restore the cultural traditions of the Greek minority.
