Byzantine Empire became known as the Empire of Greeks! Yes Kanaris you are correct. Some people are just unclear of the true magnitude of the Hellenistic Age which spread the use of Greek to all of the known world. Surely the remnants of Hellenistic culture survived well into the ages of Byzantium. I think we could say it was probably very similar to the history of Arabs. Arabs conquered vast areas in the 700s and on and now we have a very large geographical range that is comprised of Arab speaking peoples. Who dares to disagree with the Hellenistic identity of the Byzantine Empire?

Here is a great book recommend. By Alan Ralph Millard Published 1997 Bible 352 pages ISBN 0745937403 Following on from "Treasures From Bible Times" and "Discoveries from the Time of Jesus", this book provides a comprehensive survey of biblical archaeology. The treasures of the Bible lands are as varied as the stories that surround their discovery. Look here in google book form, see page 194 " Heading " The Languages they spoke. See hereZoom closer if you wish and read it carefuly.

I am not talking about the Byzantine Empire but the actual Romans that were occupying the eastern part of the Roman Empire around the time of Jesus..... If people like Pontius Pilate and a lot of the Roman soldiers spoke Greek.... that is amazing.... Ajax..that is precisely what I am talking about.... Greek influence on the Roman Empire was immense....

I am sure most educated Romans would be schooled in Greek.
