NOVI PAZAR -- A worker who on Friday in Novi Pazar cut off his own finger, and then ate it in protest, has been released from hospital but is in a "difficult condition".
Zoran Bulatoviæ is the leader of a hunger strike group and the chairman of an association gathering textile workers in this southwestern Serbian town.
According to reports, his radical move came "due to the state's careless approach toward the hungry workers in that area".
Bulatoviæ underwent medical treatment on Friday for his injury and is now back with the strikers, "in a difficult condition". He has stated that he would not give up on the demands to have their overdue salaries paid.
Today, he announced that the strikers would "radicalize their protest" starting Monday. The radicalization will include the strikers "eating one finger each day" until their demands have been met.
Deputy Citizens' Ombudsman Goran Bašiæ, meantime, met with the strikers last night, and describes the situation as "very serious". The workers have announced they would "cut off a part of their bodies each day".
"I have tried persuading them to desist from their intention to cut off body parts, but it is not my impression that anyone can persuade them without concrete measures," said he.
Bašiæ added that his boss, Ombudsman Saša Jankoviæ, would undertake all measures in line with laws regulating social and labor rights when it comes to the Novi Pazar case.
The workers, employed by Raška Holding Company, "trust Mayor Mirsad Ðerlek, but not the state organs that can resolve the situation," Bašiæ continued.
He pointed to the Privatization Agency and the Ministry of Economy as the likely institutions that can help in the case.
