I think there is nothing wrong with renaming a village or city after its original or previous name. I find it even good. Thessaloniki and not Selanik, Ioannina and not Yanya, Kastoria and not Kesrie.
But there are indeed also cases of artificial namings just in order to make the village sound Greek or more Greek. My grandmothers village for example was founded as Artsa/Artses/Artsai, but under Metaxas it was renamed as Narkissos...just because that name sounds way more Greek. But it did never have that name before, it was a totally arbitrary naming. To me the village will always be Artsa. Narkissos is artificial, thats crap.

The Slavs never entered the Mesa Mani. This is the southernmost point in the Peleponnese. Actually they once did, a few hundred, but they were quickly killed and ran out. In Northwestern Mani there was a significant group who did settle but after the Frankish period they either left or were quickly assimilated into the majority Greek populations.
