Not recently introduced but not commonly used.We dont have to re introduce ancient greek words. The greek language is a living organism and it has never stopped being spoken in Greece. The contribution of the greek orthodox church is major which as you may know always uses ancient greek during it's liturgy.

Perhaps so.On the other hand we do use some compound words today in which ponein is a synthetic and i realise that it has kept its original meaning. Let me give you two examples, filoponia=diligence and fygoponia=lazyness.

Leandros note is correct. I think the word kataponw (w is omega), has the closest meaning to the ancient "ponein". "Kataponw" means "harass, overwork."
Ancient "ponein" could have over one meanings. According to Hesychios 'Lexicon(5th cent.AD) "ponein" means:ποιεῖν(poein). ἀσκεῖν(askein). κακοπαθεῖν(kakopathein). ἐνεργεῖν(energein) that is correspondingly create(through labor), exercise,"have a hard time" and "take action".
The modern greek "ponos" and "ponw" may have evolved from the third meaning.

(just like half of the greeks are albanian/arvanites) Be proud of your past buddy.
