/Balkanweb/ www.telegrafi.com/?id=3&a=2839

Albania: Greek Mayor Sentenced to Prison
A court in the city of Vlora Albania, sentenced on Tuesday, to a six-month prison term and a 500,000 Lek (€3,800) fine, an ethnic-Greek mayor who was indicted for ordering the dismantlement of road signs because they were not bilingual, causing subsequent traffic chaos and damage to public property.
Mayor Vasil Bollano of the town of Himara on Albania’s coast, ordered the removal of road signs in December 2007, arguing that the signs should also have been written in Greek, as he considers the area a Greek-minority zone.
The removal of the road signs caused traffic chaos because they were along a section of road that belongs to Albania’s coast which is very popular with tourists. Prosecutors filed charges against Bollano for abuse of power, arguing that his actions were against the law and that the removed signs cost Albanian taxpayers roughly €170,000.
During the final hearing of the case, Bollano's lawyer tried to paint his client's indictment as politically motivated and xenophobic because Bollano is also the head of an ethnic Greek minority organization 'Omonia'. However, prosecutors rebuffed those statements by arguing that this was not possible as the mayor himself had declared his nationality as Albanian during questioning.
According to the ruling, the mayor will also be barred for three years from holding public office.
Bollano’s statements have gotten him in hot water before. He has previously declared large areas of southern Albania as 'Greek land' and claimed autonomy for the region.
Estimates of the Greek minority in Albania range from two to seven per cent of the total population.
Tirana has also turned down his demands for 'special status', arguing that the size of the local Greek community is far too small to warrant such status. At the same time, Tirana treads carefully with the mayor, mindful of its powerful neighbour to the south. However, the government’s tread-lightly approach has angered some Albanians who feel Tirana has been too lenient on Bollano. They have been infuriated by his threats that if the authorities make any major moves against him, Albania’s EU aspirations will be compromised.
That Greece is host to Albania’s largest emigrant community in Europe, and that their remittances are a lifeline for its weak economy, especially in the south, is another aspect to factor into the equation. Although Athens broadly supports Albania's goal of eventual EU and NATO membership, it has also shown it is ready to use the fate of the countless Albanian immigrants in Greece as a political pawn when the going gets tough.

Ahahahaha!!!!
If Albanian politicians were smart and maneuverable they would use this clear victory over Omonia's leadership to cast a vice grip around the party...
I think a general omonia implication should have followed...
Dont go for small stabs, go for the throat... or, to make a link to our local Lab hero, Bledi Xhaferi: crush their skulls over a rock! ;D

Haradinaj.

Apparently Himaraunion in Greece, alongside the Youth of Northern Epirus(lol, Greek minority and 'youth', that has to be an oxymoron) are asking Karamanlis to cancel his planned trip to Albania, we will see what will happen.
More importantly, Bollano has the right to appeal... and he will, and Berisha is not so supportive of the courts decision. I wonder how much noise Berisha will make to have his way... since this is no doubt something that most Albanians are happy about. Will he tread into the zone that will allow the socialists an opening? Lol, Ilir, what do you make of your hero now?
In America, the Epirus society has organized a 'special meeting'(lol!) to try and get America's attention. I wouldnt pay much attention to these though, worry about Berisha and his nasty habits...

What's wrong here? He did something against law and is punished by law. If Americans hear this they will support Albania on this.

Eh, like I said, I woulnt put much attention to the societies and organizations. Their sort of what we can call 'masturbation groups' where they all get together and act like their important. They are naturally going to protest the decision... they would do so even if he was convicted of killing a man... lol. Like I said, worry more about Berisha. Vlora is a socialist stronghold afterall...

No matter what the vorio-epirots in USA will say, I don't think anyone in Albania will care about it. I don't know about Berisha, if he supports the court decision or not, but even if Bollano appeals, the message got out...in Albania you have to respect the laws and not do stupid things like Bollano used to do for a long time now...enough is enough with this greek thingy about Himara...we're getting sick of it...

Exactly. 6 months jail is a slap on the wrist but it sets a precedent. You have to respect laws. In no country you are allowed to touch and damage public property. Destroying traffic signs, obstructing traffic....

Destroying traffic signs, obstructing traffic.... Btw, because I know Greeks here will run to Bollano's defense. I will say this: the same crime in Greece is punishable by up to, I have heard, 4 years in prison... In Albania its only up to 2. Imagine what would have happened had this happened vice versa.

I think Greece is secretly fed up with Bollano. Greece also didn't support him against NATO. They want to have better relations with Albania despite pressure from these mofos.
