You guys throw the word Besa around like candy....What you forget to mention is that the besa you have is between clan members and it has absolutely nothing to do with outsiders..Just like the Hasidic Jews will not screw one another but will screw you out of your life savings in a second. We on the outside have never really witness this besa you talk off.... Albanians have earned some bad points on the international level... Do you think they have showed besa to an outsider? I don't think so... Canaris the reason why you haven't witnessed "Besa" as a Greek is because you have only come in contact with Albanian immigrants in Greece who are not in their own home/turf so they can't give Besa. Try visiting Albania as a Greek and you'll see how you'll be treated, I assure you 100 times better than those poor souls who migrated from Albania to Greece. Also, unlike Greece, Albania did not expell its Greeks and even provided shelter for the Thessaloniki Jews that you expelled as well. Yes, we have earned "bad points" on the international level but despite what you may think the history of Albanians does not span 20 years but thousands of years. This is one of our weakest moments as a nation but a 1000 years from now we won't be judged on this anomaly.

Yes guys.. you're very good with etymoligies of the word besa. But in real life... To give you an example; A first generation Greek immigrant goes in America in 1920. He is been seen as a second class citizens by AngloSaxons. Despite that... he still praises America. Thats called besa. It has to do with morals. You saved my life back then from hunger.. I'll always owe you. PS. ..even if Americans that time... ASKED all these immigrants to come!! Does an immigrant of modern times comes in your mind that does not have that... besa?

Actually Placka is an official word in serbian for robbery, it is borrowed from our slavic neighbours and is used in some places in everyday speach, albanian word for robbery is grabitje and word for stealing is vjedhje.

Basil, Besa is more a myth than a reality. However, the phenomenon (strong emphasis on keeping it) may have existed since this word/terminology exist as such (besa) only in Albanian. On the other hand, depends on individuals and not upon who and how some nations call it...we call it besa, others call it "promessa" - promise, others say "I give you my word" and so on. Characteristic in Albanian myth is that Besa goes beyond death (or at least went centuries ago) and sometimes is/was better to die than breaking it...but again,in today's society it depends on persons' perception.
