I had forgotten about Markovic but I don't recall anywhere in the books I've read that the JNA initially went with their nationalist leaders. After an extended period yes but not at the moment Jugoslavija began to fracture.
Well Generals such as Kadijevic, Panic, Adzic all believed what Belgrade had to say (Which was the epicenter of the Greater Serbia ideology pre-war and post-war). As soon as the war in BiH started, Kadijevic resigned, as did Adzic a few weeks later (From the same post - which was the Minister of Defence for the Yugoslav National Army). Panic on the other had went ahead, and served in the JNA (Later VJ), until May 20th 1993, at which point after that Momcilo Perisic took over the same posts from Panic, until he even resigned (26th November 1998) right before NATO started getting involved in the whole Kosovo ordeal.
Right from the time the Communist Party of Slovenia left the SKJ in 1990, that is the exact moment people started choosing sides. When Slovenia left, they took the dream and the goal of a united Yugoslavia with them.
^ The two Generals (Veljko Kadijevic on the left, and Blagoje Adzic on the right) right after Slovenian Communists left the 14th, and last SKJ Conference.
I'm uncertain as to how much Markovic had power over the Army?
He was the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister is the main man for internal decisions, action, and problems. The Army answers to him, and him only, not the acting President (Or the SKJ, or any other Party in Yugoslavia, which they did). The Army should have had his back 100%, but he couldn't even get the people on his side, due to propaganda against the him.
Thats the first time I've heard that Markovic was that badly vilified by Jovic. I had immense respect for Markovic as he did a brilliant job at curbing inflation in 1989-1990. He was a true politician that cared about the people, not his own back pocket.
100% Full out agreed. He was an honest polititian, but they fucked him over like they fucked everything over.
I had known that he tried to start up his own political party and I believe he was the best placed politician to allow Croatia a much smother transition from the break up.
Its true. In the end, when he saw that there was no hope for Yugoslavia anymore, he wanted the republics to take a breather and make a light Confederation, or break apart peacefully. Nobody listened to him, I have no idea why. Everyone was too busy worried about how to shoot their next door neighbour.
