The VSK was well armed and had a huge border with the Bosnian territories occupied by the Karadzicserbs so it would have taken at least 100 000 DEAD Croatian and Bosnian soldiers to destroy it if the Krajinaserbs had been deceive to defend it the way Bosnian Krajina was defended by the 5th Corps of ArmijaBiH(without having any friendly border or nearly as much weapons).
What surprises me the most is the fact that serbs here seem to think that loosing a territory as big as Kosovo or Montenegro in only 4 days is somehow normal. Even if VSK had been nuked it should have taken much longer then 4 days.

Germany conquered France in a few weeks time in WWII, even though France alone had more Tanks (and better tanks at that, the Panzer II and III was inferior to the Char Bis and Somua S-35), more troops then Germany, and that’s not counting the British B.E.F ground forces and the R.A.F This is just an example of why you cannot look at war in just one way. On paper, the German Wehrmacht should have suffered a good trashing by the allies, even the German High command right up to the Offensive did not believe it could gain easy victory.
Croatia had spent a long time preparing for the Oluja offensive. Vast amounts of supplies, ammunition were being gathered. It was quite a logistic undertaking. It's forces very finally getting good training, decent gear, foreign advisers were a big help, but this does not take away from the ability of Croatian General Staff to be able shape that rag tag mob from a few years back into a cohesive fighting force. More importantly, Croatia developed finally a proper command and control structure, with communication all the way to company level, very important for coordinating a offensive on that scale.
In contrast, the VSK forces had spend the years since the beginning of the stalemate, not preparing at all. The bulk of the VSK was made up peasant volunteers who were not getting regular training. Shipments of arms via RepSrpska or Serbia were scares. The VSK command and control structure deteriorated since 1992 instead of getting better. On paper (in reality the VSK was a mess, with the exception of elite small volunteer units) , the VSK still should have been able to hold off the offensive for a little longer, after all it fought on Interior lines and held high ground, but in war s**t never goes by how it looks on paper. VSK command and control structure literary collapsed under the offensive, and once that was gone, individual companies and brigades could not be coordinated with each other in a cohesive defense. This also made a fighting retreat most difficult. There were also not enough troops to man the perimeter of the entire front line, this made flanking in force possible, cutting off individual VSK formations without having to hit them in a frontal assault.
Yes Croatia did receive logistical and intelligence assistance in the preparation for OLuja, why would it not, if*general is being offered assistance in the execution of his war, he will take it. And Croatia did need assistance, since the guerilla style fighting of the Territorial Defense would not do, for this kind of set piece combined arms battle. The preformance in the Medak pocket showed that Croatian army still had a ways to go before being able to execute a operation on the scale of Oluja. In the end, from a military point of view this was a extremely well executed and a well coordinated offensive. There were discipline breakdowns in some units as they pushed into Serb towns, which are a tragedy, but all offensives in Yugoslavia were marked by some form breakdown in discipline or another. This doesn’t make it right of course. Anyhow just my take on this whole mess, since i felt most of you have not really talked about the mechanics of this offensive.
