Blagdan sv. Ivana slavi se u Katoličkoj Crkvi 27. prosinca i državni je blagdan u Republici Hrvatskoj i nizu drugih država.
Any ivans, ivica's etc here.? If so, Sretan vam Imendan.

Is this like a Cro version of a slava or?
Is Aleksandar is a big Croat name? I thought it was more for Serbs.

You'd have to clarify to met what a slava is...name day is a name day...based on the saint.

^ I think it's a celebration of a house saint or something, like you know, each family has it's patron saint like a city has one, Rijeka has St. Vitus.
Aleksandar is a common name across the world, even the Albainians use Iskander and the turks have a verison, as well as Arabs. And my dad is Serb, so no doubt he liked that name alot. Old folks back home called me Sasha more then anything else

In Bulgaria St Ivan Rilski is celebrated on the 7th of January. Interestingly, the day of your St. Stjepan is on the exact date as our St. Stefan or Stefanovden.

Old folks back home called me Sasha more then anything else Its becoming less and less common to use Iskender. Mainly those of the older generation use it or its found as a surname(Skenderi/aj, in which case this can even be found among Greeks Skenderis or Serb Skenderic/ovic or Bulgarian Skenderov or Mac. Skenderovski ;D). Today Aleksander is getting more common

Unless this isnt just for Croats, illyria cant explain anything properly.

If and when the Immaculate Holy Mother Church in Rome declares a saint, it goes for all Catholics regardless of where they may be, of course some tend to just stick with saints who hail from their own tribe, which sort of contradicts the whole Christianity "spirit"
