i find it interesting how he uses the word "moral" and not "legal"
FARK SLOVENIA PEDERI!
President of the Slovene Parliament Foreign Affairs Committee Ivo Vajgl said that Slovenia has a moral right to access of the open Adriatic Sea which can be determined from the aspect of international law if Croatia honours the “principle of fairness” in its negotiations over the border.
After World War I and World War II demarcation, Slovenia lost a sea coast zone North of Trieste, which was exclusively owned by yonder local Slovenes, Vajgl said.
- I think now is one of historic moments for the Slovene people, a moment when we will either win or lose something of importance – Vajgl told Slovene television on Sunday night, assessing the situation after Slovenia blocked the continuation of Croatia`s European Union accession negotiations, which it conditions with solving the birder dispute.
“Slovenia`s moral right”
- The essence of the problem, in my opinion, is that we Slovenes are naval people and always have been. Access to the open sea is something we have a moral right to. Of course, we have to prove that we have a right to it according to international law, based on the state on the border from June 25, 1991 – Vajgl said.
- If Croatian politics wants long-term good-neighbourly relations, it will have to correct its relation towards this issue. Croatian politics will have to realise this is an issue on which we can construct long-term good-neighbourly relations. Negations will be necessary, and not to stay still with current positions, because it does not lead to the positions coming together – Vajgl explained, adding that the issue of having an exit to the open se was of exceptionally real and emotional significance for the Slovenian people, which cannot be unimportant fro Croatia if it wants good-neighbourhood relations.
- Slovenes have always been naval people, the sea is in our literature and our hearts, access to the open sea is our moral right, Croatia has to understand this – Vajgl said, adding that he has supported Slovenia`s bloc of Croatian EU Accession chapters, for the border issue to become “clearer” in the eyes of the public and for the problem to be finally solved.
