Was Kralj Nikola of Montenegro such a big hero as he has been made out to be, or was he just you average typical Monarch, who was born into power and lived the flush life, throwing his power around and using his people as pawns for his own personnel ego. He has become a huge Heroic figure in Montenegro's history but i feel without much substance. A lot of Montenegrins think he was somebody who championed Montenegro's existence and independence, but the truth being is that Nikola had eyes on the Serbian thrown too, due to his ancestors who were connected to Karadjordevic, so in truth he would have also joined Serbia and Montenegro, he really had massive dreams and expectations. Also during the Balkan Wars of 1912–1913, many Montenegrins died bravely and honourably gaining territory and land, only for Kralj Nikola to hand it all back, because he thought he made he look good as a statesman to the rest of Europe, he really wanted to play with the big boys even though we were such a small country. This is just a personal point [im waiting for Terro to run me down! ] as i had a lot of relatives who died at Skutari and who fought in his name. I also take note that Kralj Nikola did put Montenegro on the map Historically and did make some excellent contributions to my country.

His contribution to Montenegro can not be falted. He continued our Serbian legacy, he contiuned our United Slav legalcy, he continued our Orthodox legacy and he put our small nation on the map thanks to his daughters who were married off into all the major European Royal families of the time.
He was also a great military leader (although he wasnt as good as Danilo) and he was also a great poet (although not as good as Njegos). All in all I can only say positive things about the man.
I feel sorry for him that he had to abdicate his thrown and the Petrovic dynasty, but this was definitly the best option for our nation at the time. How could a vast land (later to be known as Yugoslavia) be ruled from Cetinje by a 70 year old Monarch with little education. It was very selfish of him to try and stay in power even after the majority of Montenegrins voted him out.............he could have easily stayed in Yugoslavia and lived like a nobleman with his Grandson as the king and retired peacefully.
However, there is no doubt in my mind that he wouldnt support the Montenegro of today.........The nationalist Serbian rejects who call themselves "Ethnic Montenegrins" today abuse his image and memory for their own personal and business interests, completely ignoring history and his own feelings.

King Nikola was indeed a Hero to Montenegro, not only did he put our small country on the map, he showed Honor and Charisma that many other world leaders lacked in those times, and these as well, and rightfully represented Montenegro and his ethnic Montenegrins as the righteous people we truely are.
Nikola was said to be the "Grandfather of Europe" considering the fact his many daughters were married to much of the European nobility
Now Nikola did have his faults, like the fact he gave up Skadar after we devoted so much to winning it against the ottoman's, and he bended too easily to the will of the Greater Powers.
As well as the fact that he adored Serbia too much for his own good, and had his own secret selfish aspirations to possibly take the serbian throne, this notion which briefly lasted
His trust in Serbia became his downfall, and as he said in his speech, he was betrayed by Serbia and the Serb people, because he believed that Montenegrins and Serbs were brotherly people, while serbia saw Montenegro and Montenegrins as pawns, as lessers who they could simply squash out of existance.
The majority of Montenegro didnt want to join serbia or yugoslavia, and wanted to stay independent and free, but Nikola's trust and democratic ways ended up costing the Montenegrin people dearly.
All this set aside, King Nikola truely loved his people and his country, and will always be remembered as the brave, vibrant and honorable Montenegrin soul who managed to capture the hearts of all noblemen and servants alike.

I love when you people admit this....... gaining territory and land........ gave up Skadar.......etc etc. Here we go with colonising again.
Well AADMIN ( specially to you as you seems to know a lot about your history) i wish and i really wish that one day my people will take back Ulqin, Hoti, Gruda,Plava,Gucia, Tuz , and my ancient SHPUZA which was taken by very havy force from us, colonised, snatched, taken, grabed. It seems that you never cared about indogenius population there but as the above user said: just gain other territory and expansion of what you never had.
And as for calling Krajl Nikolla a hero well a HERO to me is the one who defend his country and NOT the one who occupy another.
PS: Waiting to be edited as usuall.
